Weezy

Hello Everyone,

I'm new to Diabetes Forum, but I've had diabetes for 15 years (I will be 47 this year). I'm type 2 and was on oral medication until this past January when I was put on Insulin. I like that the Insulin is giving me great control of my blook sugars, however, it has also made me gain weight (I weigh 199 and I'm 5'4"). I needed to lose weight before (I was 179-185), so gaining is really not an option I want (I guess no one does). I'm trying to get control of using Insulin, but right now, I'm really upset about the weight thing and was thinking about asking my doctor if I could try a combination of Lantus and pills instead of Lantus and Novolog. I'm currently taking 40 units of Lantus (30 at night and 10 in the morning) and 5 units of Novolog before each meal (I was taking 10, but I thought I would drop it to see if some of the weight would come off); my blood sugars are doing well so far with this combination.

I could really use a word of advise from someone who is taking the same type of medications I am and has had to go through what I am currently going through with the weight gain problem.

I look forward to being a productive part of this forum. Thanks for listening.

Welcome to the forum. As a 40 year type 2 who still only uses pills, I still say controll is a matter of discipline. So is weight gain. Many times we say "Oh I can use insulin to keep the sugar in control so I can now eat....." The thing is the insulin helps control the sugar in our bodies but we still need to watch what we eat very closely and to exercise diligently.

Some weight gain may be caused by the insulin but have you changed anything in the way you eat? Are you getting less exercise? Remember if it is only a 30 minute walk it is still exercise and you need it.

Keep reading and listen to your body and your doc.

Hi Jan,

I do monitor my eating. Yes, I did think at first, I'm taking Insulin, I can adjust and eat more carbs, but I'm back to reality. I really can't eat anymore carbs (bread, rice, pasta) than I did before. So I'm back to normal and I eat very well, but it doesn't stop me from gaining. I haven't been able to excercise the way I used to because of a heel spur and back problems, but I'm hoping to be back real soon.

Even thought I'm not exercising, with what I eat, I should be able to lose weight, but I'm not.

Do some seated aerobic exercises or get some bands and do resistance stretches. I use a walker and have bad balance issues but I have to find ways exercise.

Do All Diabetes drugs cause us to gain weight well not really its not the drugs its the way our cells react to the drug. When You have diabetes your cells dont get the food it needs so it does crazy things When it is finally able to eat. When I was first diagnosed I had lost over 40# in a two month period. All the carbs I ate were being pissed away. As soon as the doctor put me on actos I started gaining it back and I was burning over 1000 cals in the gym a day. Its kind of funny once my FBG reached 100 I started gaining weight and no amount of exercise made any difference. When it reached the 300 mark I started losing the weight and no matter how much I ate I kept on losing weight. Once I was on the meds I kept putting more and more weight on i didnt matter how many cals I burned. IMO you can't lose weight when your blood sugar is above a curtain point if you are taking meds.
