Hi Everyone i'm a newbie!

Hi Everyone,
I've stumbled across this sight and thought why not join! I have had type 2 diabetes for about 8 years. I have been on Metformin that whole time and have had good hb1acs but lately the numbers are staring to creep up. I live in Australia and am checking out the possibility of trying Byetta. I've heard that many people have had good sucess with it. My gp recently put me on Avandia but i'm not that happy with it!. I'm wondering if there is anyone else living in Australia taking Byetta? My last HB1Ac was 7.1 up from 6.6 3 months ago. I have been really watching my diet more closely since that wake up call. One more question is over her we measure aour bsl's with single numbers eg 5.2, 8 etc. So when you guys are talking 180's 120's etc what does that stand for?
Thanks Gabbyforever

Welcome to DF Gabby, I pretty new here myself and have got some great information and support from other members. Here is a place that none of us are judged for any lack of knowledge, but are welcomed as part of a vast family. Enjoy and use your time here, and post often.

G'day Gabby, How cool to have another aussie here.
You have found a great support group here.
Those numbers are simply divided by 18 to be the same as ours, or multiply ours by 18 if you want.
I dont take meds so cant discuss them with you but many here will

Welcome to DF! Glad you found and decided to join us. It's good that you're watching your diet. You didn't mention exercise, hows that going for you?

I learned so much about diabetes here on DF. I understand that it is progressive so we can expect situations like your at some point, but there are also other possible explanations for higher A1cs. Illness/infection and use of steroidal medications can raise your numbers. Anything like that recently for you?

Gabby,

Welcome to the forums, you have found a great place for information, the people here are always willing to help and support each other.

I have no experience with Byetta, but there are people here using it so I'm sure they will chime in soon.

Stick around and post often,

Welcome Gabby, glad you found the forums. What #s do you have the most problem with, fasting or post-meals?

I take Byetta, and it does help keep the post-meal numbers in line. The injections are really a non-issue, the finger sticks are more painful. I had quite a bit of nausea when I first started the Byetta, but this resolved after that first miserable week. I'm still on the 5 mcg dose, and my post meal #s after the Byetta run in the 80's (4.4-5 in your #s.)

As the above poster said, stresses--physical and mental, can play havoc with your blood sugars. Also, diabetes is progressive, so some treatments may have to be adjusted as time passes.

If you read the Lit. that comes with your meds you will notice that diabetes meds state that it will at some point stop working and that the reason for this are unknown. Amaryl, Actos glipizide, glimperide, Januvia, all say this in the lit. I went from 1 mg amaryl to 6 mg over night.
