Let's see... where to start?!

site:diabetesforums.com (dp|"dawn phenomenon") - Google Search

Hope this helps. I've not experienced DP, so I can't really chime in.

I admit I have been called "a nut" by some people, but I honestly think not all of the members from Ohio are nuts! From one nut to another, welcome to the forum.

Dawn effect is a hard one. But here are two suggestions that I've found that do help the issue.

1. glass of wine at night (theory is to keep liver busy so it won't pump out extra glucose in the AM)

2. snack with mix of carb and protein for same reason. The ratio of carb to protein varies from person to person.

don't feel bad - 9 out of 10 docs don't know much about diabetes.
Have you found these books yet?

Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution
Carlton Frederick's New low blood sugar and you (I know it's not about diabetes but has good and detailed info on blood sugar and what it does to your body - also has good recipes that would be great for the diabetic) the diet proposed treats both low and high blood sugar.

I hope you will post often - your medical knowledge would be very helpful, and also to get perspective from the other side would be good to.

Welcome

Facts
The Dawn effect occurs in everybody its nature way of preparing us for the day about 1 to 2 hours before you wake your dear liver injects you with glucose. In a person without diabetes it just gives you a little energy to start the day, With someone with diabetes it makes our bg levels high and starts out our the day on a sour note. They say Byetta and Januvia help with this as well but I have taken both and neither seems to help much in this regard. Don't get me wrong Byetta is the best diabetes drug that I have taken so far but it has not made my morning bg go down yet. When I had my a1c done they did a fasting bg and it was 86 so I guess it could be the meter not working that early in the morning . You can try some of the tricks that we diabetics have learned over the years but you may need some meds to see any improvement. Drink Alcohol before bed or eat some nuts. make sure your blood sugar is a little high before bed. While there are several tricks that work they don't work all the time and like the Borg your liver adapts and seems to find ways around the tricks.
