| | Greetings Hello Everyone, I am 41 yrs old and was Diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes on June 3, 2008 with 8.8 A1c. My Blood glucose levels were averaging in the 250-350 range but now with 500mg Metformin twice a day and a 45 carb per meal and 15 carb per snack diet I am currently below 140 in the morning and below 160 2 hours after the start of one of my meals. I have started exercising 4 times a week for 30 minutes each time and have started losing weight. I have been feeling alot better than I had before I was diagnosed and am still struggling with feeling hungry(drinking alot of water has helped). I went from Who knows how many calories per day to 1800 overnight and haven't had too much trouble. I have learned to like raw veggies and have given up corn on a daily basis. Well thats a little about my current state and I really have gone into this with a possitive attitude. I have been reading this forum for about a week now and have read some great ideas on how to stay on track and am really glad I found this place. With this forum and the online Calorie counter I have found I feel like I am on the road to physical happiness. The support of my family has really helped as well with my kids marking the sugary drinks in the fridge NOT FOR DAD. Lol |

| | | David,
Welcome to the forums, I was diagnosed last November and know that this forum has had a huge hand in my success in controlling my diabetes. Lots of information and support from really great people.
The first while can be overwhelming and it takes a little time to get your head around things. There is a good book "The First Year: Type 2 Diabetes" by Gretchen Becker. It was recommend to me when I joined here and I found it very informative and easy to read.
I would also recommend lots of testing, as that's how you learn which foods work best for you. Test in the morning and then before each meal and two hours after first bite. It will take a bit of time to get your numbers down (but you will). I aim for being below 110 in the morning and below 140 two hours after first bite.
Good to see you are watching your carbs. I tend to avoid things like white bread, rice, pasta and potatoes.
Ask lots of questions, that's how we all learn. It's good to see you have good family support.
In relation to Metformin, bear in mind that it can take 3-4 weeks for it to really take effect and that it is best to eat before taking the Metformin.

| | | Hi David, welcome to the forums. You've been give great advice already. Sounds like you have a great attitude and will do well!
I'll add my encouragement to the TEST OFTEN advice. Its the best way to keep blood sugars in line. Testing 2 hrs after the first bite of your meals will allow you to see how various foods affect your blood sugars and help you make smarter food choices.
You may find that by minimizing your carbs a little more, that your morning #s will be lower as well. I was given a goal of 110 or less for morning #s and 140 or less 2 hrs after first bite of food.
I've read that insulin resistance causes that extreme hunger....and that exercise and eating lower carb will help with this (as well as metformin, as it helps your body better use the insulin you're making).
Hope you post often.

| | | Thank you all for the support and advice. I Go back to the doctor on June 30th for more bloodwork and to see how i have been doing on the medicine and diet. I think I can tell a difference already in how the metformin is helping me. | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
