| | | Howdy I was surfing the net as usual and found this Forum under a Yahoo chat site for Diabetes.
I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes about 1.5 months ago and after a month on Metformin nothing was happening. I was having readings above 500 all the time and pinging over 600 sometimes.
I was put on Insulin 2 weeks ago, and my Blood sugar has gone down, but not at the 100 level yet. I do feel better but still have the symptoms like heavy water drinking, excessive urination and massive leg cramps at night when I sleep. I'm sure all of them will pass as soon as I stablize.
Anyhow, I will be here alot cause I always appreciate good info. |

| | | Magnum, welcome! Glad you found the forums. I had lots of leg cramps when first diagnosed. This did resolve when my numbers stabilized. It may be that since you're going to the bathroom so much you're dehydrating and getting the cramps because your potassium levels are a little low. I'd suggest using some of the salt substitute on your food to help get some potassium.
Hope your #s stabilize soon. You won't believe how much better you'll feel.
Not sure of your height and weight, but there are some here who were misdiagnosed as Type 2 when they were actually Type 1 (many docs assume if you are an adult, you're automatically going to be a T2) .....there are blood tests your doctor can do to determine whether you are T1 or T2, that are more diagnostic that just an A1C or a fasting blood sugar. I only mention this because of your really high blood sugar levels being unresponsive to metformin.

| | | Howdy Magnum,
Welcome to the forums, glad you found us. Lots of great information and people ready to help and support.
The first while after diagnosis can be overwhelming, but it really does get much better and as you have seen, when your BG number come down, you do feel so much better.
Are you watching your carbs? I tend to avoid high carb foods like white bread, rice, pasta and potatoes. Testing often is a great tool as you learn what foods work for you. If you test two hours after first bite you learn how the food you eat impacts on your BG.
There is a good book, you will see mentioned on the forums, "The first year: Type 2 Diabetes" by Gretchen Becker. It's easy to read and very informative.
Ask lots of questions, that's how we all learn.

| | | Welcome to the forum. What type(s) of insulin were you put on and on what schedule? As Princess Linda said, people are misdiagnosed one way or the other all the time. If you've been put on long acting insulin only or a mix (two types in one vial), then you'll never get satisfactory numbers. There are a couple of tests your doctor can order. One tests for antibodies (to determine if you diabetes is caused by an autoimmune attack) and the c-peptide test, which lets you know how much insulin, if any, your pancreas is producing.
Are you being treated by your primary care doctor or an endocrinologist? If you haven't seen an endo yet I'd suggest you get an appointment ASAP.

| | | I am so glad you joined us. Hope you see your numbers improve soon. Listen to the others on the forum. I am a T2 but from what you have said it sounds like you may be T1. I had to check with 3 doctors before I could get anyone to believe I was D because my Cholesterol was so good. I finally found a doctor who took one look at my Fasting reading and my readings 2 hours after eating and said you are a diabetic. Don't get discourage. Keep asking questions.

T1 is considered "Juvenile" diabetes and therefore "cannot" happen in an adult. Well that just shows what so called experts know. Ask your doctor for a C-peptide test and a Gad antibody test. These will nail down which type you have.
Which insulins are you using? Are you seeing a GP or an endocrinologist?

| | | Sorry I haven't replied back, but I have been out on an aircraft carrier for a few weeks. For the first time, my blood sugar read a 161. Not perfect, but better than 600.....
Man, did I have some terrible leg cramps while out at sea, but I lived through it.
Thank you for the kind words and advice. | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
