Hello Group,

I just joined this group because I bumped into a blog by the diabetic pastry chef, which led me here. I was diagnosed this past February of 2008. I am a member of quite a few diabetic forums in yahoo groups and sparkspeople.
I decided to join this group after surfing the forums on this site and I found myself laughing at various comments. This forum seems to have more younger people posting. I am in my mid 40's and I value my lack of maturity . Anyway, it keeps me laughing. I try to look for the joy in life, though it's not always easy.
In my case, being diagnosed with diabetes was a good thing. I could have had a heart attack which can give you no warnings. I have since adjusted my eating habits dramatically and I have lost a lot of weight. I now need to incorporate a work out schedule and quit smoking. For anyone that was going to tell me how bad smoking is for me, spare us both, I have been informed! It's on my list of things to do. I am a work in progress.

Thanks, Stef ( A.K.A. Justifiable)

hello Stef, Welcome to DF.
NY is a place that I would love to visit and those hot dog stands that you find in the side walk as that reminds me to go to a shop that I love and get some.
So are you uptown or are you downtown? I also like NY for those funny men in their tutu's in Les Ballet's Trockadero de Monte Carlo in 42nd street as they are great dancers and funny too.
Here is a site that will answer your questions on diabetes issues and some fun too. Enjoy your stay.

Hi Stef,

I think you might be the female version of me! Glad you found the forums, it's a great source of information and support, I was diagnosed last Novemeber and don't know what I would have done without the wonderful people I found here, always ready to help and support.

If you are looking for a good book about the big D, then have a look at "The first year: Type 2 Diabetes" by Gretchen Becker. It was recommended to me by Princess Linda and I found it to easy to read and very informative.

Are you testing regularly? I have found testing often helps you find out what foods work for you. I test every morning and then before each meal and two hours after first bite. I aim to be below 110 in the morning and below 140 two hours after first bite. I avoid carbs like white bread, rice, pasta and potatoes, altough I hear good things about Dreamfields pastsa (can't get it in Ireland).

Good to see you like to laugh, you'll fit right in here. Visit often and ask lots of questions, that's how we all learn.

Hi Stef,

Welcome to the forums! I also fall into the "older" group - I'm 40 and also in NYC. Diabetic pastry chef, huh? Now that's a job I'd like... I'm off to search for that blog!

Welcome Stef!!

You've come to a great place. You can search for many topics, but don't be shy -- jump right in and ask any questions you may have.

Hey Poodlebone -- you are not in the older group IMO! I'm 47 and trying to think YOUNG!! I know what you mean though . . . we have lots of "young" people here on DF.

Hi Stef.

I am originally from NYC. Lived all over the city, from the upper west side to alphabet city, and in Queens and Brooklyn too. The convenience of the city used to lend itself to feeding my bad habits. I do miss that some times -- being able to walk down my block and get whatever, whenever (Pizza, subs, etc).

Quitting Smoking is EASY, I did it tons of times...I know it was tough, but came down to my health and well being. As for exercising, that took time. I resisted it for years in fact (diagnosed in 2003) but finally started exercising in February this year around the time I found these forums. I have dropped about 2 belt notches so far (about 12 lbs). Started gradually and worked my way into it.

Glad you found us.

Marc

Welcome to the forum. When you decide to quit smoking ask your doctor about zyban or welbutrin. IMO the best way to quit smoking. I smoked for 27 years (I started at age 11) took zyban for three days and just decided I didn't need to smoke any more. 7 years later and I still smoke when I am dreaming(sleeping).
Maybe the sleeping world is the real world and this world is nothing more then a nightmare! How would we know.

As for quitting smoking... I've heard the saying that it's easiest to drop one addiction by replacing it with another. I think you may have found your latest addiction. When you feel like lighting up, just pop by and hang out with us.
