New Diabetes , Trying to find my way around

Been very confused about how this came about

jun 14 Did about 25 minutes Stacking Slab wood. When finished, i sat down felt very dizzy, clod sweats, had a beer to cool off, but felt dizzy and hard to focus, so walk to Trailer, just not to be able to focus, laid down, spins, cold sweats, fan on helped. 3 hr later not felt to bad, eat non sugar food, but still felt off.
Next day BP 160/95.
Started Blood pressure pill Jun 16
Given verdict Jun 17, Started met-phormin

Doctors in Ontario have to time to assit with find your way around unless you have specific question, so been asking several Type 2 ( that don't do very good at controlling there diet) and several type 1 ( that cause me to think there solution don't always apply ( might be wrong here) , Type 2 responses take longer to affect BS level.
Havent been to Diabete Clinic yet, waiting for Console. So fummbling my way on web and speaking to diabetic about my situation.
Now here , reading and asking.
Thank before hand.
Pierre

Check out Gretchen Becker's book, The First Year: Type 2 Diabetes: An Essential Guide for the Newly Diagnosed. She really helps to put things into perspective for someone new to diabetes.

I have also found Blood Sugar 101 to be helpful, as well as Dr. Bernstein's site. (Dr. Bernstein, a Type 1, advocates a very low-carb diet, which many people find helps to keep their blood sugar levels under control.)

This how I have kept my bg under control (except for a six month period where I had to deal two deaths in the family)
in four years I have had only one a1c above 7.0. IK have only had to adjust my diet in the past six months because of stress and the fact that I stopped taking pain pills. For the past 3 + years I have been taking pain pills for 3 bulging disks, a pinched nerve, arthritis of the facet joints. For some reason when I took pain meds my bg always stayed under control. I had to stop taking the pain meds because I work so far from home Now I just live with the pain. I regress

I Take Byetta twice a day, I also take cinnamon pills once a day and saw palmetto once a day.

I exercise at least a half hour every day. .
• ½ hour on the stationary bike
• ½ little Gazelle
• Long walk
• Hide and seek with the boys does the trick.

I Test: Mornings and before driving, 2 hours after meals and before bed.

My bg goals
Morning below 130 -----------------------ideal around 95 - 110
2 hours after meals below 140 ---------ideal below 120
Before bed below 140--------------------ideal 120 to 130
I Never go to bed with bg below a 100 when I wake up my bg will be =>130.
As I gain more control the numbers should get tighter.

To determine carbs I subtract fiber from the total carbs. I also subtract artificial sweeteners.
sugar alcohol count half the listed carbs If the label says 9 mgs sugar alcohol then you Subtract 4.5 mgs from total carbs.

Some Fats are good we need them for healthy cholesterol. Mono and poly are good.
Trans fat and saturated fat are bad.

I do not eat Low fat foods they are not good for type 2 diabetes because they replace fat with sugars which makes them high carb.

I eat as little sugar as I can not because they have a worse effect the other carbs but because sugar has no nutritional value so why eat it.

I don’t eat candy

Foods I can eat;

Meat = Beef, chicken, fish broiled or baked, eggs, hotdogs(all beef), Hamburgers, and Lamb,

Nuts - most nuts are low in carbs, peanuts, walnuts, and almonds any that have total carbs of less then 10g. I eat cashews at bed time. If I eat a meal that I would have in the past eaten fries or chips with I substitute peanuts.

Spreads I buy no sugar added jelly or I buy one of several reduced sugar brands, no sugar added Peanut butter – good for cholesterol

vegetables = Small kernel corn on the cob 1 ear per meal. I eat lots of Green beans it raises good cholesterol. I can eat squash, zucchini, celery, Tomatoes Green peppers, pickles (half sours),
cucumbers

I eat Sugar free ice cream or no sugar added if I go to Brusters., Sugar free jell-o
Carb smart ice cream has 12 carbs per serving once you subtract the fiber and splenda it only has 4 carbs.

Chocolate that has a cocoa % >= 60% or low carb chocolate

Breads = I eat whole grain or low carb whole grain breads. I try to find bread that has less then 7 grams of carbs per slice. Pepperidge farms have several brands in the 5g per slice range.

Pasta = I eat whole grain: “Dreamfields”, Another good brand I like more is “Barilla Plus” whole grain pasta the penne pasta is pretty good. A lot of restaurants offer whole grain pasta

Reward for sticking to life style:
I eat pizza at least twice a month
I eat at five guys burgers at least twice a month.
I eat popcorn at the theatre and since I have twin three year old boys I don’t get there much.

Rice = I eat brown rice, or wild rice

sodas = I drink diet only

I Drink lots of Water dehydration and diabetes don’t go well together.

* Avoid high carb food any anything with a lot of refined sugar or white flour

* Fruit = I Limit the amount of fruit I eat because they all have a lots of sugar and I have acid reflux brought on by the high sugar content in the stomach due to 9 months of bgs over 500
I eat apples (granny smiths), and tomatoes (well I did until the recent warnings)

Books about diabetes that I have read are:

Sugar-buster’s
Glycemic Revolution
DIABETES CARBOHYDRATE & CALORIE COUNTER
Diabetes for dummies
About 7 ADA books – take with grain of salt
1001 tips for diabetes has some good info.

CDC Diabetes – Frequently Asked Questions – Exercise and Diabetes

Exercise is very important for people with diabetes to stay healthy, but there are a few things to watch out for.

Physical activity can lower your blood glucose too much, causing hypoglycemia, especially in people who take insulin or certain oral medications. Hypoglycemia can happen at the time youíre exercising, just afterward, or even up to a day later. You can get shaky, weak, confused, irritable, anxious, hungry, tired, or sweaty. You can get a headache, or even lose consciousness.

To help prevent hypoglycemia during physical activity, check your blood glucose before you exercise. If it's below 100, have a small snack. In addition, bring food or glucose tablets with you when you exercise just in case. It is not good for people with diabetes to skip meals at all, but especially not prior to exercise. After you exercise, check to see how it has affected your blood glucose level. If you take insulin, ask your health care provider if there is a preferable time of day for you to exercise, or whether you should change your dosage before physical activity, before beginning an exercise regimen.

On the other hand, you should not exercise when your blood glucose is very high because your level could go even higher. Do not exercise if your blood glucose is above 300, or your fasting blood glucose is above 250 and you have ketones in your urine.

Avoid all trans-fats. They are nasty.

I limit my saturated fats, but I don't avoid them.

Keep in mind total calories do matter. Fats have 9 calories per gram compared to 4 for protein and carbs. While fats are good and necesary, too much is still too much. Balance!

Go to the book store and get a book to help you count your Carbs (carbohydrates). Carbs are your enemy. Don't cut them out completely because you need some. But limit them. Avoid or limit white foods like bread, sugar, rice, pasta. substitute whole wheat bread and pasta, and brown rice. When you eat them you still need to eat smaller portions. Eating smaller meal will also help to lower your blood sugar BG. Keep reading and asking questions. You will be a pro before long. Oh--Welcome to the forum. Glad you found us. Keep us posted on your progress.

Welcome Pierre! Do get the Becker book, its a great source of information.

Metformin can take a few weeks to reach optimal results in your body, so if you don't see the #s you want at first, don't be discouraged. Also, watch those carbs (rice, bread, pasta, potatoes) and get as much exercise as possible.

I'd encourage you to test often as well, esp 2 hrs after your first bite of food. This will allow you to see how different foods affect your blood sugars and help you make smarter choices.

Hope you post often. There are lots of great people here to offer advice and support.

Your program sounds just like mine . Except i still can't handle the sugar subs yet. I drink mostly water . I eat same meats . Plenty of salmon patties, tuna .

I just ate omelet with onions, peppers ,cucumbers, tomatos 'no toast, only bread is at supper '. Lunch will be tomatos, okra ,onions and beef. I eat Low Carb Ice cream and two dove chocolates with nuts in evening. I have lost half the weight I needed to lose. We both are trying to quit smoking, that is a big problem .

Squash, oranges , apples, green beans, mostly fish and beef and chicken ,no pork ,whole wheat 'two slices a day according to bg.s '. I still eat small amount of real butter with olive oil spray added .

The bread ,potatoes was the hardest to stop eating ,especially corn bread with greens .

I was hungry for first month on this diet, but it gets easier with time.
