just wanted to introduce myself

diagnosed: type 1, 7 weeks ago

I'll me attending the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point this fall. I'm very excited, but nervous as I haven't had diabetes very long.

I'm also excited to be apart of this forum.

Don't be nervous; it will probably take a little while to get into a routine of checking and injecting, but people here know what it is like, and I'm sure we will do all we can to help you.
Check blood sugar often
Carry hypo-snacks everywhere
Get support from friends and family. I rely on my friend Steve and his diabetic cat Rocky (who I DXed ).
Take it slow, don't expect perfection straight away (or, in my case, at all), and don't beat yourself up if it doesn't always go to plan.
Don't take **** from anyone, especially Doctors.
Remember to be yourself, and don't let diabetes make you afraid to do whatever you want: have a life, not half-a-life.

ps. During exams: Do frequent tests in the run up to exams, get up early on exam days, test often until the exam begins, take snacks or sugarful soda.

Welcome to the forums, Melissa! I was diagnosed at age 19, in college, and had a hard time adapting at first. The technology was more primitive 21 years ago and I think you'll have a much easier time than I did. It's a tough age for diagnosis.

Welcome to the forums. I have to admit that I misread your post. I thought you had been diagnosed with a new form of diabetes "1.7" weeks ago. Of course I was wrong, which my wife will happily point out happens with much too much frequency.

Anyway, you will find lots of people here who are well informed and have gone through very similar things as you are going through. It is really good to have a place to ask questions and just talk about things. Welcome.

ps. There is a type "1.5" so I am not totally a bozo.

I was also 18 when i was diagnosed, turned 19 just a few days later. Once you get into it a bit more, and your doses and numbers get more predictable (with that i mean that you know what rations that works for you), you probably won't notice it much that you live with a chronic disease. Testing and injecting, calculating and carrying supplies becomes 2nd nature pretty fast- at least that's how it was for me

And it's fully possible to enjoy sweet things too, either enjoying it as hypo treatment, or just inject some extra to cover it, or have very little so it won't affect much. I'm having some chocolate in this very moment and it's so nice (I'll probably pay for it in a while though... I've had more than just a little chocolate, and it doesn't say how much carbs it is in it on the package, so i can only guess how much insulin i need)

Thanks so much for all the welcomes and advice.

It will be two months since I was diagnosed on Tuesday, and it had definitely become more of a "regular" in my life.

My mom says that I am adapting pretty well. I've gotten used to giving shots in public. Like last night I had to give my night time Lantus shot in the middle of a rock concert. That was pretty interesting.
And my friends have been really supportive. I just hate that going to college in fall (i will be majoring in Web & Digital Media Development as well as Business) I will be losing my support system and need to meet new friends. But I'm sure it won't be as difficult as I am thinking now.

I was diagnosed the 13th of may and the 15th of may was my birthday !! i guess its a bad week for diabetics ?

I guess Im the same diabetic age as ya ! Dont worry if you can help it, it becomes easier as you go along.
