Welcome!!!

Glad you found this place so soon after diagnosis. Wish I had had internet 8 years ago.

Please ask lots of questions, people here have lots of great ideas and support.

Hey Cyberus, Welcome to the forum we probably all wish we didn't need to visit. I've been here just a few months and found a wonderful person that helped me out. I've also found many answers to my questions along the way. I hope you find that the forums do the same for you.

Thank you Ellie and Randall

I've already learned more in a night than reading the reams of junk the hospital handed me.

Metformin 500mg 2x day

My level was 533 when I went to the hospital, 305 when I left.
I managed to get down to the 160-200 range after a few days.
Then I found this place and realized that the meal plan they gave me was nonsense and readjusted things... running between 140-160 now.
Another day or so of tweaking I'm hoping to get into "normal" range.

g'day cyberus, Welcome to Df .
This place is the best when it comes to support with this disease. I've not seen a question go unanswered.
I found going for a walk after meals to be the best way to keep my numbers in the normal range, although some days its hard to get motivated

HI & Welcome to this great forum, cyberus.

The Metformin will take at least a month before you start noticing some improvement in your blood sugar readings. You may also experience some stomach upset........that will pass with time.

My advice..........test often, follow a low carb diet, keep a log of what you're eating so you'll know which foods you do well with and which foods you may need to avoid, and get in some form of exercise if you're not already doing so.

Welcome cyberus! Glad you found the forums. I've learned much more from these good people than i've ever learned from my doctor. Amazing how little info they give us...and expect us to do well.

Like you, I found the "recommended" diabetic diet to be WAY too many carbs for me to handle. Eating lower carb and getting regular exercise works wonders!

There's a great book by Gretchen Becker "The First Year, Type 2 Diabetes" that you'll see recommended often...its a great read, full of good information.

Again, welcome to the forums! Hope you post often.

I've noticed the digestive issues already is there a normal time frame for this to "settle"?

I started testing 2x a day with the free meter from the hospital because of the limited supply of test strips.
I lost my job 4 months ago and haven't had a job with insurance in over 15 years so testing supplies are going to be an issue as are prescriptions and doctor visits if the clinic the e-room doctor referred me to doesn't accept me as a "free clinic", we'll see how that goes tonite.
On the brighter side the hospital social worker gave my name to a few charity groups and one was able to supply me with a Truetrack meter and a 100 strips which is allowing me to increase my testing to 4x a day for a few weeks. after that who knows.
I'm using a program called Diabetes Pilot for logging/tracking glucose levels, food intake, carbs etc. I have two weeks trial on that so I think I can get a grip on the what foods etc before it runs out, its helped alot already, it let me look back as see what I was doing wrong when I started reading this site and saw that the handouts from the hospital were nonsense.

Yeah, the recommended diet in the hospital handout was far far in excess of what all you real diabetics are talking about, finding this site straightened me out on that.

I wanted to apologize for a couple posts back ..

... I just read my own post and it kind of sound like I'm panhandling for handouts and that wasn't my intention, the money thing here at home kind of drags me down occasionally and I guess I was being a bit morose.

Doesn't sound like you were "panhandling" at all. Life and finances are hard for most of us at some time or another, and its especially frustrating and scary when diabetes is thrown into the mix. NEVER feel bad about an honest heart-felt post...you never know who else is going through the same thing who might be feel less alone by reading your post.

Sounds like you're doing well, esp. considering all the stresses you have going on now. Glad you got the extra strips so you can test as often as you need to.
