Cool ooooh HELLO there :D

Hi everyone

I am a 21 year old female, have Type 1 diabetes (since 1993)
and am currently contemplating switching from Humalog/Lantus to a pump. Big decisions, but I am hoping that the decision will get easier the more information I can get.

I will be moving to the UK in September 2009, so am quite desperately trying to figure out how the UK healthcare services deal with Diabetes etc. Many questions to come in that direction...

Hi -light-, Welcome to DF! Glad you found us. I'm an advocate for the pump as I believe it is the most flexible delivery system for insulin... barring a fully functional blood sugar regulation system But it is simply a tool and not for everyone. There are several members here from the UK who should be able to help you out. Where are you moving from? Do you plan to wait until the move before trying for a pump?

Coming to the UK, eh? Hope you pack a brolly
The first step in getting Diabetic services in the UK is to register with a GP (General Practitioner). If you are type 1, they should refer you to the local hospical's Diabetic Clinic - although the GP might try to make you join the surgery's* centre. Resist! Mostly these clinics are held by one GP who thinks he's about to win the Nobel Prize for Curing Diabetes, and a nurse who took a day off to attend a course in the D. Endos, on the other hand, for all their bad press, at least attempt to specialize in Diabetes .
It should work like this GP -> Endo Clinic -> Other services, help, free meters and specialist support staff.

While your Endo may change your medication, the GP is the one who distributes the prescriptions (you should be able to get a medical exemption from charges), so keep them informed about new changes.

Welcome to the forums, btw
