Hello...

...My name is Rohit. I am 28 years old. I had diabetes symptoms for last 1 year. I bought glucometer and tested myself and found that I have glucose level 265 (early morning without any food or water).

My blood pressure is 114/68 and heart beat is 71/min

I am too worried about my health. I have state covered health insurance but I am worried how is it going to affect my Insurace.

Will my insurace cost go up?
How is it going to affect my next new job ? ( My current job expires in 5 months and have to start looking for new one ). Will the positive Diabetes record have any negative effect in new recruitment process ?

I am in big confusion on weather I should get doctor or wait and see how change is diet will affect my blood glucose level ?

Please suggest.

Thank you.

I suspect that any negatives that result of having diabetes on your record will be outweighed by the benefits of better health and longer life you get from accepting it and learning to live well with it.

Hi Rohit, Welcome to DF! Glad you found us.

A fasting Blood Sugar (BS) of 265 (mg/dl??) is way above normal and a likely indicator of Diabetes but I am not a Doctor nor do I know the rest of your medical history. A high BS is going to damage many parts of your body in time: eyes, kidneys, nerves, heart, blood vessels etc... and is to be avoided. I'm not sure where you live so it is hard to advise about insurance and employment after a diagnosis but I strongly suggest that your health is the most important consideration.

Thanks for quick response. It really makes me feel better.

I currently live in South Dakota, US. For sure I am going to get professional treatment from doctor but for now I just wanted to know how it will affect my insurance and new recruitment process.

thanks

Welcome Spitfire! If you get your blood sugars normalized (whether by diet/exercise alone or with the help of medications), you will feel much better physically and be an even better employee. I remember being so physically exhausted at day's end (and I have a desk job) that I could hardly keep my eyes open during my drive home...and i'm sure my job performance suffered.

If you have a pre-employment physical, with #s as high as yours are, it will show up on a blood test. How much better would it be to have normalized #s on a blood test, even with a diagnosis of diabetes.

I can understand your worries about insurance. Its very hard for diabetics to get health insurance outside of employment, without having a pre-existing condition clause in effect for "x" amount of time. Make sure you don't let your insurance lapse before starting your new job. If you have continuous coverage, you should be able to be picked up with no problems under your new employers insurance...if it lapses, the pre-existing condition clause will go into effect.

Not sure what type work you do, but we have people on the forum in a variety of careers. You don't have to tell your employer about your diabetes (though you'd want to put it in your medical history when you go for an employment physical).

If you don't see a doctor....and continue with #s as high as yours, you will have complications sooner rather than later. If you decide against seeking medical support, do keep an eye on your blood sugars, watch your carbs and get regular exercise (this is what you'd do if you were a T2 diet-controlled diabetic anyway) You would want to see numbers 110 or less fasting and 140 or less 2 hrs after the first bite of food. Don't let those high #s continue!

Hi Rohit! I am a 21 year Type 2 veteran, now 65 years old. First of all, do not be alarmed. Yes your blood Glucose Level (BGL) is high BUT all is NOT lost. Make up your mind to keep your partner (Diabetes) peaceful and friendly.. he(she) will be ok. Need to see Dr start oral treatment .. BUT MORE imprtantly... Regular exercise and proper diet.. low Carbo and fats! You will be able to drop 265! Really! but be steady, don't waste time!
Good luck and welcome! P Moh

Welcome.

It should have no affect on your hireability. There are laws against such descrimination. Mind you you can forget about being a helicopter pilot or bus driver. There are laws restricting us from such things.
