Four year old with possible Type1

Hello i am a single mother of a very active four year old little. A year ago she got ill and her urine and blood was tested with a 30 day range test. At that time she had keytones in her urine, which she was said to be borderline. A year past my daughter had what i thought to be constipation which lasted several days even after stool sortener was given. I was in preparation for her to see her father for a long visit and wanted to make sure her tummy ache was gone when she then could not keep water or her meds down and cried in pain. I then took her to er, which they checked her urine again which resulted in high levels of glucose and keytones, they did a blood test her blood sugar was 171. The er talked to her primary doctor which deceided to see a specialist and sent me home wth a monitor for! I am beside myself i have watched her food, and can not believe this happened so quick! I need advice to ease my mind. They doctors will not allow her to travel out of my care and her father thinks this is not a concern! I do not know what the normal level should be if they told me i still was in shock and blocked it all out. I really need some support i have wonderfull parents who love her dearly and stand beside me!

Normal blood glucose is 70-90 mg/dl, but it can spike up to about 130 after a meal. 171 is certainly higher than it should be, but it could be a lot worse. The presence of ketones also suggests that there is inadequate insulin. Onset is of type one diabtes is usually very quick, especially in children. And if it is in fact type 1 diabetes, there is nothing that you could have done to prevent it. With modern insulins, the condition is very treatable, so don't worry. And welcome to the forums .

Welcome to the forums

It is worrying that there is both glucose and ketones in her urine, and that bloodsugar of 171 is a bit high, not extremely high and usually not high enough for ketones, but it's higher than it should be. I think the doctors should take more tests, see how the pancreas is working and if there is any antibodies in her system. Type 1 usually comes quite fast and out of nowhere, but there is exeptions... For me it took about 1 month from starting to feel a bit unwell until i was diagnosed and put on insulin, others went for several months feeling unwell.
It's important your daughter gets more tests done, before she might become one very sick 4 year old. In the meanwhile, keep an eye on her bloodsugar.

You need to call these doctors and specifically aske "What is wrong with my daugter", IN LAMENS TERMS PLEASE.....Is she diabetic, and still on a honey moon, if she is 171 why is she not on insulin, all these questions....Load yourself with tons of info about type 1 diabetes and go to these doctors and ask what are we doing with her.....

Ask for c-peptide tests(insulin production), and gad testing(antibodies for type 1), so you can have a set diagnosis, and when I was younger I spilled keytones if my bg went above 140, so this is something I kind of got used to.........not anymore, but I did as a child for some reason....I think because my bloodsugars were always high....

Also a year before I was diagnoised with diabetes, my stomach always hurt me, I probably was on the onset but didn't show the typical signs till four months before I was diagnoised, a whole year before I cried and complained of belly aches, and my stomach felt awful.....I think that I was showing small signs a whole year before, but never did anyone test my levels since I didn't have the signs....and I was not diagnoised until the sugar in my urine was 764, by the time I was in the emergency room, I wasn't registering on the meter, and the meter in the hospital read over 1200, so I was almost or very close to a coma by this point.....

Be your daughters advocate so you know how to help and how to take care of her......Good luck and my heart goes out to you...

Cheryl
