| | | Hello newbie here Hi I'm Noni1974, I was told I have diabetes 2 weeks ago. The doctor gave me a meter and told me to test 2 times a day for 2 weeks and then read her the results over the phone. Well I did that. Now I'm waiting for my next appointment to see the doctor August 4.
I had shingles in January which for my age is not common. So I thought I should get a check up since I hadn't had one since I was 17 for my last job I had as a teenager to get a work permit. I first went to the OB/GYN to get my annual exam. Then I made an appointment with a internal medicine doctor for my check up. She tested my BG/Cholesterol/thyroid. My fasting BG was 150. That was after a 12 hour fast. She wrote me a letter telling me to get my butt into her office ASAP. My doctor explained to me that I have diabetes and I can't eat white food anymore and I should test 2 times a day and gave me some medicines I have to take. Lipotor for Cholesterol. Lisinopril for my kidney's. Baby aspirin for me heart.
I'm not on any meds yet for the diabetes. My number range from 128 (my lowest fasting) to 298 ( my highest not fasting). I've been reading all the books and websites I can find on this. My doctor wants me to try to control this with diet and exercise. I've been trying to follow doctors orders but I find that I crave carbs really bad. I'm tired all the time and I pee all the time. I'm hungry all the time. I'm not good with self regulation and I worry about the damage I'm doing with these high numbers and no meds.
I have been trying to change the way I eat and what I eat but I keep thinking of all the things I can't have now. I think that's a negative attitude but I can't help it. I'm finding it hard to accept this. I hope that a better attitude and acceptance will come in time.
I just joined here so I thought I'd say hi. |

| | | Welcome Noni! Glad you found the forums. Its hard to get that diagnosis of diabetes, but as you can see if you read many of the posts here, it is possible to have a great life, with just a few "modifications." Right now, you're scared and stressed, which is normal....but after awhile, this will become just another chapter in your life.
There's a great book you'll see recommended here a lot for T2s..."The First Year, Type 2 Diabetes," by Gretchen Becker. It had a lot of information in an easy to read format.
I know its hard thinking of all the things you can't have....but there are lots of things you'll be able to eat, just as always.
One of the best ways to find which foods cause your blood sugars to rise is to test 2 hrs after the first bite of food. Your 2 hr reading should be 140 or less. If you test at the 2 hr point, you'll be able to make smarter food choices.
Hope you post often!

| First .. Hi
Second .. as a newbie myself I can confidently repeat the advice I got at the start.
TEST TEST TEST
2x a day isn't enough to teach you what does and doesn't spike your glucose numbers.
Keep records. I can recommend a program called Diabetes Pilot, its downloadable and has a 2 week trial to help you get a grip on things and a decent food database to make things easier.
Test 2 hours after you eat. If your glucose number jumps what you had the last meal was either not good for you or you ate too much of it.
"White foods" are not the only culprit, you need to become a label reader, foods that aren't "white" can and do contain levels of carbs that will surprise you, and have added sugars you don't expect.

Hope you post often! | I've already read that book. I got it from the library. I'm thinking about buying it for myself just to have it hear in case I need a refresher course. I'm going to ask my doctor about diabetes classes. I've got an appointment to see an eye doctor to get my eyes checked. I've got an appointment with a nutritionist. I'm trying to get all my ducks in a row so I can live and keep my sight and my feet and my life.
I just keep thinking about all the things I can't have anymore. It's driving me crazy. I hope as I get more knowledge and experience with this I'll be able to see all the things I can have and be happy with those. |

| | Rather than thinking about all those things you should not have anymore, think about all the things that you have been told (in the past 20 years) are BAD for you that you can now have again!!!
i am talking about eggs, cheese, meat (all types) etc etc etc.
i try to keep my carbs way down and i do NOT crave carbs anymore! in fact, i don't even get hungry for snacks!
my weight is stable at 75 kg (165 lbs) which at 5' 10" means i am relatively slim.
i find that i look forward to eating the things that all the "so called experts" told me NOT to eat for the last 20 years. that ends up completely negating my feeling about super high carb foods!
it works!
