| | | Golf & Diabetes Any suggestions on what SL is best while playing golf? Am playing in heat & huminity in Texas. Usually walk for the exercise, but it is just too hot now. Is it better to keep the SL slighly elevated? I use glucose tablets and a peanut butter sandwich on wheat during play. Without those I can not keep up others. I will be having a great round, then get alittle wonky and lose it mentally/physically for awhile. Any tips on how it is best to avoid the ups and downs? Thanks!

| | | Cyn,
I recently started back playing golf, granted we do not have the heat/humidity in Ireland that you have in Texas. I would think if you are finding that during the round that you are going low, that it would make sense to run a little higher before you start, perhaps a snack before you tee off, I find that a glass of milk when I'm low will rise me without a big spike and keep me level for longer so perhaps if you find the same it would be something to try.
I keep both glucose tablets and orange juice in my bag just in case. As I say we don't get the high temps you experience in Texas, but even so I make sure to drink plenty of water as I play, just make sure you are not getting dehydrated.
Do the people you play with know you are diabetic and what they need to do if you get very low? If not, in fairness to them and you, I would recommend you tell them.

| | | It happens to me all the time. Don't start to play if you are under 125. Cut you basals by at least half. Have tablets and juice on hand for the low BG occurance. |

| | | Everyone is different. It really depends. Experiment. Be prepared.
Do you carry your clubs all 18 holes? It makes a difference.
Being on insulin, you could go low or high. Sounds like you have gone low.
Eating some protein before the start will give you a slowly released form of energy without disrupting you blood sugar levels.
I like nuts.
No, I really like nuts.

| | | Welcome to the forum, Cyn.
Be sure to carry snacks in your golf bag and glucose tabs or candy to treat a low.

| | | Everyone's different and you being type 2 makes it different for you than me.
Try to figure out your patterns, always have some sort of fast acting glucose with you to eat in case of hypoglycemia.
And if you're right handed, keep your left arm straight. |

| | | Thanks! When cooler I walk, but have a push cart. Right now I am grateful for the cart! I am going to try beginning the round with over 120 SL and try to keep it there while playing. I didn't think about the OJ! I drink lots of water. And yes, the foursom that I play with know that I am diabetic and do watch out for me. But there are many times that play alone or am placed with others. I have medical ID braclet and I wear and medical ID necklace with ER phone numbers and such. Am paranoid about that. Will try the fast acting glucose. The tablets that I use are good, but very fast. I am SO glad that I found this forum. Am the only one in the family with diabetes and it is so nice to find others to share with.
Thanks again!
