Smile Significant other of Diabetic

Hi all. I'm Bobbi, and my significant other has Type 2 diabetes for approximately 11 years. Recently there have been changes and we are looking at significant dietary changes. I'm looking for support for me from other spouses/sig. others as well as some good information on dietary challanges and solutions.
One of the most difficult is being able to provide him with the things that he "likes" versus cooking to just a diet. Hoping that this next visit to the physician results in a referral to the dietician - who has an excellent rep for working with folks' likes and dislikes first and foremost - then offering other recipes.
Thanks ahead of time for allowing me to join your group and increase my own knowledge of diabetes and the challanges that everyone faces.
Bobbi

Hi Bobbie, welcome to the forums! What are some things your s/o enjoys eating...maybe we can offer some healthy alternatives.

Is he watching his carbs?

It might be good for him to visit the forum and read some of the posts. Its always good to know others are going through the same struggles you are...It made me feel much less alone.

Hi Bobbie,

Welcome to the forums, I think it's great that you are doing this for your significant other. Do try encourage him to join us too.

How are his blood sugar readings at the moment? How often does he test?

I whole heartedly agree and endorse the concept of not cooking to a diet. It is a matter of finding foods that he likes and that suit his blood sugars.

The good news is there are lots of things that will work and they can be really tasty too.

Hi Bobbie,
I fully feel that you will learn the most from this forum. Read lots and be a little careful with what you hear from a dietitian. More often then not, they do not specialize in Diabetes and give information that's not always helpful. Even the typical ADA diet condones too many carbohydrates - their thinking, cover the carbs with medication - where most of us here try and use only what medication we "need" and try to keep that amount down with ingesting as few carbohydrates as possible through the day. Your husband's size, age, etc. will make a difference about 'how many' are optimal for him. In a recent poll taken not that long ago here on the forum, most here try and stay between 45-90 carbs per day, second place was 90-165/day. I think the ADA states around 250?

Good Luck and welcome! Please post often, I'm sure your point of view on things will be helpful to us all too!
