Hi everyone

I recently failed a 2 hr. fasting glucose test. The target was under 200 and I had 220. I am 26yrs old. 135 pd 5'6" normal female.

My Dr. wants me to lose some weight (long story but I was significantly UNDERweight for a long time due to being a super athlete in high school, and he wants to see if my body thinks that weight is more "normal" for me)....

Anyway... my fasting readings are fine (usually between 82 and 105) and my 2hr post meal reading can be anywhere from 111 to 179 based on what I eat.

To me these don't SEEM high enough to fail a 2 hour fasting test, but I am only 3 weeks into this and am REALLY confused to say the least.

My dad has type 2 (diagnosed at 50yrs old, about 10 yrs ago) and my Grandpa has had type 2 for a long time (both do little to control it.

HELP! I really don't want to go down the same path as them.. with all the weight, eye, leg, attitude problems. I want to get this under control and set a better example. I don't have much info from my Dr. as he just wants me to "lose some weight, exercise... and we will retest around halloween"

I am finding my appetite hard to control (especially how to lower my carbs and eat something other than raw veggies and meat! (I hate most meats)), and feel so defeated as far as "getting back in shape" goes. Sorry if all of this information is confusing/excessive etc. I just wanted to make sure I covered the basics about me so someone might be able to help. Any advice would be useful.

I am glad I found this site, and am looking forward to learning a LOT!

Hi Ohana, welcome to the forums! You'll find lots of good information and support here.

There's a book i'd like to recommend, "The First Year, Type II Diabetes," by Gretchen Becker. Its got a lot of basic information about diabetes, including good advice about treatment, diet, meds, etc. The author herself is diabetic...I found it very helpful when first diagnosed.

My mom and grandparents were T2 diabetics, so i've seen a lot of the bad things that can happen when people don't effectively control their diabetes. Its good incentive for me to take care of myself.

Do you have a meter? Checking your blood sugar often, esp 2 hrs after the first bite of food, will help you see how different foods affect blood sugars and let you make smarter food choices. We're all different in our tolerances, so testing is the only way to find what works for you. I was given a 2 hr goal of 140 or less. Check out the recipe threads...there's some good recipes available.

I encourage you to continue eating low carb...your cravings for sweets and carbs will minimize the longer you stick with it. Even now, the times I eat more carbs than usual, I get hit with incredible cravings afterwards.

There are lots of foods you can still enjoy (not just meat). Tell us some of the things you enjoy, and perhaps someone can help you "modify" them to be more blood sugar friendly.

Ask lots of questions, learn all you can about diabetes. We're all here to help each other. Don't get discouraged, take it one day at a time.

thanks

I am going to Barnes and Noble tonight for that book. Thanks for your help and encouragement. I am looking forward to being a regular visitor here.

Yes I test every time before and after I eat. At least until we retest at the Dr. so we get a good idea of how I react to foods etc.

I like veggies, fruit sometimes, beans and nuts are ok. dairy products as long as it isn't too creamy - whole fat milk, whole fat cheese, etc.
At the moment I am addicted to sour cream and mexican food )(It's a phase)
Love sushi (I KNOW! ) seafood, fresh summer garden veggies.

I love pastas, breads, rice, etc. but no more I guess.

I just want some food options other than salad, fish and veggies, and broth based soup. Oh, and I am a doctorate student.... so it has to be EASY and FAST, or I will probably cave and eat something I shouldn't.

I have found a quick snack that is yummy - dubliner cheese sliced in sticks with raw orange pepper slices. Odd combo but oh so good. And if you cut up a bunch ahead of time it's quick.

Welcome - there are quite a few vegetarians here so they might have some great ideas to get protein without meat.

Ohana,

Welcome to the forums, you have found a great place for information. Ask lots of questions, that's how we all learn.

There are lots of things you can eat and make meals enjoyable. There are quiet a few mexican and mexican style dishes that are blood sugar friendly. If you need something fast, tasty and filling try a stir fry, packed full of veggies, peppers, lots of flavor and easy to prepare, what's more they are filling!

Do get the book Linda mentioned, I found it very helpful and easy to read.

Welcome to the forum. I am glad you found a place to ask questions and find good advice. First, don't try to change your lifestyle all at once. Make small changes. Remember that no carbohydrate is bad for you. You just have to know how many carbs a food contains and adjust your intake accordingly. Learn just how much is in a serving(15 carbs is considered a serving) and how many serving you should have in a meal. I try to limit mine to 45 carbs per meal but some on the forum can not tolerate that many carbs at a meal. Don't give up. You will soon have the hang of all this and be giving this same advice to others. Good Luck.
