New member & new Type 2

Hi all! Nice to meet ya. I like to be called Kirby online - it's been my handle for about 12 years now. I didn't realize though that Kirby was more of a man's name - lol But I'm a girl.

Just 4 weeks ago I went to see a doctor for a check-up since I hadn't been to see one in many many years. He called me a week later and told me to get in immediately. My blood glucose level was 330 and my 3 month number (Can't remember the name at this moment) was 11.5 - I was put on insulin seconds later.

This month has been a whirl wind to say the least. A friend of mine suggested that I find an online support group and this place looked busy and friendly.

Kirby

Heya Kirby, welcome.

I was diagnosed in July so I too am fairly new to this and this place has been a godsend in helping me get my type 2 under control.

May I suggest you update your profile so people know a few things that will help them help you.
Your type (Type 2)
Your location, so people in the US won't make suggestions not relevant to someone living in the UK for instance. State is also helpful for references to places to buy things.
Putting your various numbers like HbA1c, triglycerides, meds etc (just look at peoples signatures) is also very helpful because that gives people with experience a starting point for giving advice.

Welcome girl Kirby.
Sorry you had to join our growing group.

You're going to find lots of good info here and I mean a lot.
You may feel free to vent, rant, cry and just complain all you want. We understand.

It's going to take you a little time to figure some of it out. I don't thnk any of us has figured it all out.

And no, you're not going to die and it's not your fault.

Thank you, I will indeed do that. It will help me understand what it all means as well.

Thanks - I wasn't worried about the dying part but I have been pondering the fault, because it seems like someone's to blame, right? But no, I don't believe it is my fault. I've been eating really well for the past 5 years, I've been watching the carbs, the sugars, the processed foods, taken wheat out of my diet, etc. I've lost quite a bit of weight in the past 5 years as well (still overweight though) but I'd think that all of my careful eating would have helped keep the diabetes away - but alas, it didn't.

Thanks again for saying it isn't my fault. I can just stop thinking about it now.

Kirby

Hello Kirby,
Welcome. There are a lot of us who are going through this. It is only a bump in the road of life. Insulin has become my best friend. for metformin. They will make you better. The very most important thing that you can do is to stick with your diet. You will be fine.

Best - Ted

Kirby,

Welcome to the forums, glad you found us but sorry you had to find us

The initial stages can be emotional and even overwhelming, but it does pass, when you get your sugars under control you will feel great.

I'd recommend getting a book called "The First Year: Type 2 Diabetes" by Gretchen Becker. I found it easy to read and very informative.

Ask lots of questions, visit and post often,

I was going to do a search to see if anyone had found this book to be valuable. Thanks for the recommendation.
