Hello new here

Hello i thought i would introduce myself.Im jo and my 18 year old daughter karli went to the drs last week with stomach pains and he took a blood sample. It showed her sugars were 15 so we found ourselves at the diabetic clinic this morning. It is all so scarey, they said it is looking like type 1 and likely she will start on insulin next week. She has to test her sugar 4 times a day and her urine and keep a diary until they ring her on friday.I am worried as she tested it half an hour ago and it was 20.5 and from reading on here i see that is really high.

Hi Jojo, welcome to you and your daughter! I'm T2, so I don't feel really qualified to offer much advice to T1, but the 20.5 blood sugar reading is quite high. If her #s continue at the level (and without insulin, i'd think they will), i'd be contacting the doctor sooner than a week.

I'm sure one of our many T1 experts will chime in soon.

I'm sure this is a scary time for you and your daughter, but you should take heart from reading posts from all these T1s who are doing extremely well and having great lives, while still managing their diabetes.

Hi JoJo, That was my son's nickname when he was younger. I still call him that, but he is just Joe to others.
I am sorry that you and your daughter are going through this. It is a scarey thing, especially when it is your child. There are many young people here that can help her and all the support you could want from all of us.

Hi Jo Jo, that number is way to high. Ring the hospital and ask for advice. I can not understand why anyone who is suspected of having type 1 is told to go home and monitor for a week
Also get your Daughter to reduce the amount of carbs she is consuming this will help her numbers until she manages to get some help.
Best wishes
Sue

Many people run in the the 20's and 30's constantly It's long term damage that we're mostly concerned with, a few days in the 20's is negligable, but there are short term issues too.

Give the diabetes nurse a call. She should be starting insulin immediately. But if she can't get in, keep her as hydrated as best you can and monitor her weight. If her lights are on but she's not there (ie very unresponsive), get her in. If she's dropping say 2lbs a day, get her in. If she starts to smell 'fruity', get her in. Also restrict her carbohydrates, especially juices, to nothing. Meet/fish and veggies, preferrably salads, only. Lots of water.

Maybe at least get some strips to test for ketones. I suspect that's what the urine strips are for. High ketones is the real danger. I've never had them, so I really can't help there.

Sorry to hear about your daughter.
I'm am new to this myself and the only comfort I can give you is that I have a Type 1 friend who is in his early 30s.
He's been type 1 for almost 20 years.
I never knew.
I've spent a lot of time with him and never saw him checking or injecting himself. He lives fearlessly and is the MOST positive and hopeful person I know. I am NOT exaggerating.

I myself have recently been diagnosed pre-diabetic and I am not familiar with a bs "20"?
I thought the numbers were more commonly in the hundreds such as 240 for example. Is this a measure of bG then??

In the US, we measure results in mg/dL, while in other countries, its measured in mmol/L. There's a converter under "Site Navigation" to the right of your screen that will enable you to convert these numbers. Thus, 20 mmol/L is equal to 360 in mg/dL.

Thanks they have given her strips to test her wee and it does have ketones in but they knew this at the hospital. She also has to collect 48 hours worth of urine and keep a food diary. We are going to ring her nurse first thing in the morning if it is still so high and ask her advice.

hello and welcome to this wonderful site Jo Jo. You will lern a lot here. The injections are not the real big deal as most people think and the BG meter is a great guide and take this everywhere so if in doubt please test.
Can your daughter can work with a computer?

Welcome to Diabetes Forums jo jo.

I think the doctors are being a bit cavalier about your daughters high numbers. If your daughter is feeling quite weak and her ketones are getting any higher, I would call the emergency room and take her in.

Type one diabetes is easily treated with insulin. There is no reason that your daughter should have to wait a week to start lowering her numbers so ketoacidosis kicks in. If your daughter gets back up in the 20 range, I would make a call to your doctor.

Hi jojo, everyone else has given great advice so I'll just say I hope your daughter gets better soon and gets the insulin she needs, I think all of here that are diabetic can relate to how she is feeling and it sucks.

Thanks ev1.Yes ant hill she does use the computer so i will encourage her to join.We ended up taking her to hosp early hours of this morning as she didnt feel well and her reading was 25.3.They tested her blood for acid because of the ketones in her urine and as her blood was clear they sent her home.I think the monitering is because there was some confusion as to wether it was type 1 or 2.They said its looking like type 1 but she isnt as ill as they would have expected her to be.I think they have just caught it early as she has had the thirst about a month but is just getting headcaches and blurred vision the last few days. She has lost some weight but had she not gone to the drs with stomach pains it would have gone undetected for longer and she would have become more ill quite quickly.

I am so pleased you took her to the dr I hope her Bg level is starting to come down. Low carbs and exercise will help lower them. I had headaches and blurred vision at dx for a couple of weeks and only now the vision is improving... I am into my 4th week of being a diabetic. Be assured there is light at the end of the tunnel but it does take work.
