| | | OK, so this is my first post diagnosed in 2000, never had very good control. Really fell off the bandwagon lately, had an A1C of 11.1. <--- not a typo. My docs are really going off on me. I need to get out of denial. I hate all the foods they want me to eat. The smell of most vegetables makes me gag.
So, right now, my T2 sux. I did get down into the single digits a1c at last bloodwork, a step in the right direction.
I feel like I'm eating compulsively. I'm also an alcoholic and addict clean and sober 26 years so I'm familiar with compulsive behaviors.
I'm heavily experienced at posting on forums and likely will be visiting a lot. Try not to get tired of me too soon.
Jeez, everything I want to say sounds like whining. My AA sponsor would rip me a new one.
My name is Tom and I'm a diabetic. ugh. |

| | Welcome to the forums, Tom.
Nice to see you are working in the right direction, you will get lots of support from a lot of very caring , knowledgeable and wonderful people here.
I too have some compulsive eating habits that I deal with regularly. So there is something in common already.
To me you don't sound like you are whining, you sound like you are making a huge steps in admitting your problems (once again) and seeking help in a great community.
Hope to hear more from you and welcome once again,
Cass

| | | Tom, as Cass said, it takes a great deal of courage to admit when you've got a problem.
I have to say that I understand where you're coming from, as another compulsive eater & recovering (7 years and counting) addict as well. I'm worried about what my next A1C is going to be because although I was doing well (had my A1C down to 6.4 back in July) I've been giving into cravings far too often the last couple of months.
That being said, glad you're here. We're all here to help each other, so jump in, make some friends & we'll deal with this just like any other addiction/compulsion - one day at a time. |

| | | Tom,
Welcome to the forums, I glad you have found us. This is really a great place for information and support.
Well done on taking this first step and posting so honestly. That takes courage, as you can see people here will support and accept you as you are.
I know you were diagnosed 8 years ago, but as it would appear that this is a new start for you, I would highly recommend you get a book called "The first year: Type 2 diabetes" by Gretchen Becker, I found it easy to read and very informative. As I say I know you are not in your first year, but you may find that things have changed alot since you were diagnosed.
I overate for years and I reckon you could have classed me as either a compulsive or at least a comfort eater. The one thing I can say is that in the last year (since DX) since I have really cut down on my carb intake, I do not eat or feel the desire to eat the way I used to. I have read that eating high amounts of carbs (which I did) can cause you to crave more carbs. So perhaps looking at your carb intake and reducing it, may be something that will help you.
Take you A1c as a starting point, that is a measurement of the past, now focus on the future. You say you have a compulsive/addictive nature but you have not given yourself credit for also being a very strong person, you are clean and sober for 26 years, that is no small achievement. If you can conqueror a drinking problem, then you can most definitely get control of your diabetes and reap the benefits of feeling so much better.
Please don't feel that you can't say things becuase you believe it will sound like whining - because it won't, not here. This is a great place to come and vent, if you need to whine then do it. The great thing about being a member of these forums is that you can be honest and what may sound like a whine to others, will probably resonate with people here.
We are all in this together, share you experiences and frustrations, it will help you and probably others - then you will see how other people have gone through the same experiences.
We are all much stronger together, use that combined strength to get healthier.
Do visit and post often, we won't get tired of you. Heck if the folks here put up with me, they can survive anything!

Low carbing is pretty controversial, for some, but the vast majority I've seen do it have really succeeded! Read up on it. |

Many people will try to tell you what you can’t eat with diabetes.
Most will be well-meaning.
Rather than compounding the problem by telling you what you should
eat, I’d recommend a simpler method, eat by your meter. Buddy 7 Essex uk |

| | | Welcome to the forum. I agree with the others. You are in the right place and we all need to vent every now and then. Feel free to vent when you need to.
Don't try to make so many changes at one time. Just a few changaes can make a big difference. Try changing from white bread to whole wheat bread. Try changing from white rice to brown rice. Try changing your pasta to whole wheat pasta. These foods contain lots fiber. The nutritionist that came to our D classes said it helps to eat your meat first. Meat satisfies you so you don't eat as much and meat does not have carbs. You may have to gradually add veggies to your diet. There are foods that I do not like. I do not eat them. Dont forget to eat fruits. While they are high in carbs we need them in moderation for energy and the vitamins they provide. Also adding a little exercise can go a long way toward lowering you BG level. I was amazed to find that when I started exercising my Fasting BG dropped from the high 90's to the mid 80's.
Visit often to learn all you can and Post often to let us know how you are doing. Good Luck.
