Yet another newbie...

...to throw on the pile!

I've just been identified at pre-diabetic (A1c 5.6, fasting bG borderline, post-prandial bG greater than 140 mg/dL) and my doctor would like to be aggressive in heading off trouble, so here I am with a low carb diet, metformin, and marching orders to lose some weight!

I've lurked for a while and have found some threads very informative and am appreciative of this resource!

-Stacy

Thank you for the welcome!

The diet is not-so-organized, beyond doing a food diary, cutting the obvious criminals (refined sugar, potatoes, bread (doom!)), and checking my post-prandial bG to see what causes the biggest effect. I have a friend who swears by South Beach, but I haven't explored too many of the commercial diets yet. I picked up a copy of "The EatingWell Diabetes Cookbook" and will probably flail around with that for a while.

Welcome Stacy! Glad that there at least some Doctors out there who are stepping up to the mark and being pro-active about treating Pre-Diabetes before it becomes any worse... too many adopt a wait and see attitude

Low-carb is a good way to go (at least for some of us)... but I'll warn you now that, your cook book will probably be the standard low-fat dogma I don't know that particular cook book myself, but I see the cover on Amazon says "carbohydrate control" while showing a plate of what looks like pasta...

great. the other things we tend to avoid are all sorts of pasta and rice. most fruits (except some berries). high sugar veggies like pumpkin/squash. other hidden grains such as corn.

also note MILK is laden with carbs. also most low fat foods are full of sugar.

so avoid low-fat anything and embrace fat - it is actually good for you...

Hi Frank! Thank you for the welcome!

The book seems pretty good so far, despite the pasta on the front. Heh. It has an information section for ~40 pages, then the recipes. The recipe organization has a nice touch where in each section, the page nuber increases as the amount of carbs in the recipe increases.

This is definitely a major shift in thinking!

Hi Joel,

Truly this is going to require a big shift in my thinking - especially since I was indoctrinated with all the low-fat diet info some time ago! Thank you for the info...maybe I won't feel quite so bad about a bit of butter now and again.

btw, the Moon Cat rocks! XD
