Newly diagnosed T2

Hi,

I was diagnosed last November that I'm a type 2 diabetic. What's a good place for a resource online? Food guidelines, appropriate medicine etc.

Presently I'm not taking any meds. The Dr that diagnosed me put me on Amaryl, but I have since switched doctors and my new one has taken me off Amaryl and wants me to lose weight. Since the first of the year I've lost 25-30 lbs.

Rich

Hello and welcome Rich! This place is a great place to talk to people who understand waht your going through. You can get some great advice on lots of stuff and recive tons of support. The people here are ready and willing to help. Ask questions and people will answer. The people here will tell you what worked for them and what did not. Their are people here who have been through everything. Some people have had this disease for a long time and some who are like me and you and have been recently diagnosed. I have found some wonderful advice and some great support. If your looking for a good food guide check out Calorie King . Good luck and take care!

Hi Rich! I'm pre-diabetic, and have been hanging around here like a sponge trying to learn everything I can to prevent becoming diabetic. That is so great you have lost all that weight! How are you doing it so quickly? I think that's my biggest problem right now is being overweight. Anyway, this is a great place to get started and make new friends. Welcome!

Hello Ramack & welcome!

Congrats on losing so much weight! If you can avoid taking meds and feel great and have good control of your blood glucose, that is wonderful. You've come to the right place for support. As for resources online, if you want to know a bit more about meds, there is 'Drugs.com', and another link I found useful is for the 'Glycemic Index'. There is also a good book for newly diagnosed people : 'Diabetes for Dummies', by Alan L. Rubin. In the same 'for dummies' collection, there is also a cookbook. Your best bet is to read, read and read everything you can put your hands on. And then find what works for you. I hope you were given a meter to monitor your blood glucose. It really helps understanding how your body reacts to diff foods and situations.

Take good care!

Hello and welcome, Rich. After diagnosis, I found myself spending hours in Barnes and Noble reading and collecting books about diabetes while sipping coffee. I still ended up bombarding this forum with questions. Read up and ask away.

Thanks for the welcome!

Gunnie, what's a pre-diabetic. I thought you had it or you didn't? And if you did, then you were either type 1 or type 2?

Looking back, it wasn't too hard loosing the weight, just took some discipline once I got started watching what I ate.

I was diagnosed 11.17.2004. I weighed about 195-200 lbs and 6ft tall. A little over weight but I didn't fit my perceived mold of a diabetic. And it doesn't run in my family, so I figured the doc had it wrong. A week or so later I decided to get a second opinion and my fasting blood glucose level was even higher than the first test. 171 on the first test, 178 on the second test.

During Christmas, I visited my parents and my dad showed me a chapter in "The South Beach Diet" about diabetes. I had also read a book written by a Dr in New York that treats his patients with a low carb diet. So I thought I would try watching my carb intake, eat more fresh veggies, chicken and beef. In doing that, I lost the weight.

I had more tests done last week. All my numbers look good. My A1C is now 5.8. Last November it was 7.3 when I was diagnosed. I'm going for a lower number.
