Mom and Zakk have chosen to take type 1 by the horns..

Hi All, A month a go today my son was diagnosed with diabetes. Fortunatley, Zakk is pretty laid back kid and has actually done extremely well adapting to this desease. We refuse to let this desease control his life and have taken the proper steps to make this a controllable part of his life. I thank God everyday that he was born in an era of modern technology!! We are currently honeymooning and learning how different foods effects everything.

welcome to the forum!

honeymooning can be frustrating at times...but i found it be be also a small blessing (i can pop a grape or two into my mouth without worrying about a bolus, etc.)

how old is your son? is he currently on MDI (multiple daily injections)? how is he feeling since he started insulin?

Welcome to Diabetes Forums, Mom! I can already tell that you and your wonderful son, Zakk will do great. You will learn a lot here about diet, different methods of control and hopefully, make some friends along the way.

Welcome to the Forums.

He will be 15 in a few weeks- he honestly has never felt anything yet. We caught it early on as I noticed he was drinking and drinking and drinking so I took in to the ped who didnt really even want to BS test until I refused to leave.. So during honeymooning its cool to eat a couple grapes every hour or so? I am having him check what seems to be every other hour, the dr reduced his Lantus to 12 and carb ratio to 1-15 yesterday. He was at 80 before breakfast had french toast with low sug syrup and half a bannana and 1.5 hr later he is at 88. The doc prefers to see him around 100 right now..

Hi, Zakksmom . . . welcome!

Kudos for standing up to the doc & refusing to leave; I hope he takes you more seriously from now on. You & Zakk are gonna do fine!

well...everybody is different!

during the honeymoon there is still some insulin being produced (although in my experience, sporadically...)

so if i eat a grape or a goldfish cracker here or there, it doesn't radically affect my blood sugar...not enough that i need to bolus for it.

but...it all depends on your ratio. mine started at 1:30. at that time, i could eat a 10g slice of crustless quiche (all dairy and veggie carbs) without a bolus. so that's what i had for lunch every day.

more recently, i went to a ratio of 1:24.

i'm now at 1:15 for breakfast/dinner and 1:18 for lunch.

so i know that 1 grape is roughly 1 carb...and if i eat two or three while my son is snacking on them, i don't have to bolus. any more than that, and i do.

you'll get to know what your son's body can tolerate over time.

and you'll be able to fine tune his I:C ratio too. it takes a little while

but it sounds like he's doing great so far, and you are too!

Thank you so much for the info- We have been shopping for a pump and it is so confusing. So many pros and cons.. I'd like one that he can live like a kid- the Animus keeps popping up given iits duribility and it has the calorie king counter. I see that you are from Ontario, my husband and I lived in Brampton just outside T.O. for a while. What a beautiful place.

OMG small world.

That's where I live...Brampton! Born and raised! We live in old Brampton, very close to Gage Park. I love that area.

I'm actually a newspaper reporter for The Brampton Guardian as well! (I'm working right now, in fact.)

I'm also looking into pumping. So far, I like the (idea of) the Animas OneTouch Ping the best...seems to have a lot of capabilities above and beyond the others (other than not having a CGMS...).

We lived on Aintree Ct off of Bramalea Rd with our peeps and then moved in a high rise near The City Center when we lived there, the views were spectacular on the 13th floor. The Pasquale's are relatives of ours and still live there. I worked in Missasauga (?) something like that for Melmart Distributors its been 25 years since I was there I can only imagine how its changed. We also have relatives in St Catherines, Niagra Falls, North Bay and Hamilton. My husband was born in Hamilton and played hockey as a kid. I remember the stars they seemed to be close enough to reach out and touch when you got out of the city- that's my fav memory of CA. I remember riding the underground trains in T.O. the tube I think they were called and flying down the interstates the Que'?? we can't go that fast here. A rep from Animus came out to my home this week, they are actually introducing an intragrated CGMS in spring 2010- I have contacted the other bigger pump co about 4 times and unfortunately cant get a response. I would like to compare the 2 but given my experience with their customer service thus far perhaps its a sign. Anyway, its been great remembering my CA days.
