Living with Diabetese

Hi Everybody,

I have joined the forum today only and writing my first post. Thank God that such a forum exists.

I have been diabetic for more than 22 years. Initially when diabetes was detected I was so scared and read about complication. I went almost hungry, walked day & night, lost 8 Kg weight from 68 and have been maintaining at 60 since then. I managed to control it without medicines for more than 5 years. However, my family pressurized me to take medicines- such that quality of life could be improved.

I have been playing Tennis ever since and started medication. BUT I HAVE NEVER FELT HEALTHY, NOR THE QUALITY OF LIFE HAS IMPROVED BY MEDICINES.

Now that I have been taking medicines, I feel they are responsible to a large extent for the mess I am in. Now I dare not leave these medicines.

I have been a fighter and am sort of obsessed about mt diet exercise ( tennis) & spiritual practices. However, for almost last 1 year, Tennis & exercise is causing lot of strain on my body. My whole body aches, the head gets clogged and I spend all idle time in an effort to relax the body. . I have tried walking as an alternative. he brisk walk has the same effect. Somehow, I feel that stressed body also increases my blood sugar level. If I don't play - I feel sluggish.

as far as my blood sugar level & lipid profile etc is concerned, I have never been happy with reports. Somehow, my faith on doctors is diminishing gradually. With higher doses, the blood sugar does come down, but I feel tired and depressed.

I am trying every permutation & combination as to what works and what does not. I want to avoid insulin. Many a times I feel that I am doing TOO MUCH, so I am getting little relaxed about everything including Tennis, Walking & yoga etc. But my PP sugar level is up. I am looking for a combination where I feel healthy with controlled sugar levels.

Having let out my frustration, I am feeling better - also because I had good tennis today. Felt tired, relaxed and now in office. I propose to consult now super specialist, who may at least explain to me why I get tired after exercise. I even thought of meeting a psychiatrist, who may explain from medical point of view about the concepts that I have about controlling blood sugar with right amount of exercise & myths associated with diabetes.

Barring Diabetes, I am happy and content with life and learning to live with pain.

I am sure that there many like me out there, who may share their experience. Who knows I may pick up something useful.

Bye & so long.

Ranjan

Yes welcome to DF.

My preference is for a wide variety of exercise activities - I wonder if you have considered mixing in more different things. Tennis is fine, I enjoy it too - likewise for walking. Perhaps you would find it helpful to expand your options. Perhaps a combination of cardio and strength training. What are your thoughts on that?

Also, just curious - but why try so hard to avoid insulin? Have you considered using it on trial basis?

Welcome to the forum Ranjan. I'm a real novice compared to you but it would help us if you took the time to fill out the signature portion of the CONTROL PANEL (right hand side of this screen to get to Control Panel, then in next window, upper left, clik on EDIT SIGNATURE). There you can type the meds you're on and the dosages and your general diet and your most recent A1c test result. Like are you lo carbing?, moderate carbing?, etc..

By and large we're not doctors here but we can look at your routine and medications and maybe some of us had similar experiences we can share how we got to feeling better. I take the 'once' a day insulin and it's totally changed my life and experience with diabetes. I know many people think of insulin as the 'last resort' or that we've 'failed' at our activity program/diet. Nothing could be further from the truth. What's more - is most medical science these days considers it a 'first line' of defense not a last resort at all.

From all the activity you do -- you probably have a great BMI and don't have much if any weight to lose. So if you don't have much weight to lose you're probably not all that 'Insulin Resistant'. Then, if you're lo carbing in your diet and the PP sugar level is still high it could likely be that your pancreas has lost a bunch of Beta cell mass and you may not have much choice about insulin. Only certain diagnostic tests (a C-Peptide, for example) will tell your doctor the story there. I know that uncontrolled blood sugar does indeed make us lethargic even if we exercise. But your meds could be part of the problem too. So many possibilities..

So for now -- tell us a little more about your 'particulars' and maybe some of the folks here can offer some ideas. Of course having a great relationship with your doctor/endocrinologist and/or diabetes educator is a high priority.

Many people will try to tell you what you can’t eat with diabetes.
Most will be well-meaning.
Rather than compounding the problem by telling you what you should
eat, I’d recommend a simpler method, eat by your meter.

Thanks. I have just edited Signatures and have given details. Since I am from India, the medicines being prescibed may not be relevant there.

Mr Endrocinologist is a friend of mine. With his consent and refferal I am going for a detailed check up at a super speciality hospital.

No I am not allergic to insulin. I have used it once. After check up, if it is necessary, I will go for it.

Well, my spritual practices have been a great help in accepting and dealing with diabetes in last 10 years. I am confident that I will come out of this little crisis.

This is a great forum, where we can share our frustration, good & bad experiences and what works etc etc.

Pl. keep in touch

Ranjan
