Semi-recent Diag. Type 2, 22 yrs old!

Afternoon everyone!

I got this site by searching for a good pancake recipe and liked the atmosphere. I'm a 22 year old male, recently diagnosed with Type 2.

If I might blab a little (sometimes I still have trouble with the acceptance part!), my dad has severe type 2 diabetes, uses insulin, has a 3x5 notecard of Rx's he takes, went in for eye surgery, has a graft put in, and is generally of the "I have the magical hypodermic, bring on the buffet" mindset.

Knowing the symptoms, I was getting the classic signs, the frequent drinking/urination, twitches in the hands and feet, etc. When I went in to the doctors, I almost had to FORCE the Physician's Asst. to do the Diabetes blood testing.

Two days later, a not-so-healthy A1C of 14.5.

Three months later, a very-healthy A1c of 6.2.

Now... if only I could figure out how to gorge on Pizza and not spike out the Wazooie.... ;-)..

Thanks everyone!
-Mitch

Hi, Mitch, & welcome to the forum!

Sounds like you've got things handled.

As for pizza...an odd but surprisingly good crust:

1 c cooked cauliflower, mashed
1 egg
italian herbs (rosemary, oregano, etc)

Mix together and bake @ 350. The recipe I found didn't give me the consistency I liked (fell apart too easily) but I discovered if I baked longer, until it was nice & brown, then flipped it & browned the other side, it worked really well.

Someone in the forum suggested taking shredded cheese and melting it in a frying pan till it almost burnt. Tried it and it really is delicious though a little salty. This post makes me wonder why cant we use that for a crust? just put a thin spread of pizza sauce and mushrooms and pepperoni. Sounds good anyway. Or even use it as a tortilla, wrap it around some cut up steak or chicken fajitas. Quick and low carb anyway.

hi genie
the pizza crust recipe i have been using is the same as yours with the addition of 1 c mozzarella cheese...i got the link to it from another thread on this forum...brown and flip and then put your pizza toppings on it....you can do a quick broil on the last part.....it is really good....people at work are making it now!
also at times is just take browned hamburger meat put some marinara sauce and mozzarella cheese on top and pop in micro...
works for me...sounds like you are doing great so far
welcome!

Re: My dad

I've seen him in the hospital with a Glucose lvl of 1400-some. As bad as it sounds, the whole, "I'll do the opposite of whatever my dad would do in this situation" works!

Thanks for the recipe ideas, too!

I'm not sure if I'm a 1 or not. I've had a few people insist I was, but my Dr has said that I'm a 2. I think I caught it early enough and did a drastic enough 180... that or my Body REALLY LOVES Metformin...

You should have your doctor refer you to an endo just to make sure. There are so many stories of people living their lives thinking they are type 2 when they were actually type 1. With all due respect to your doctor, one can't distinguish between type 1 and 2 simply by an a1c.

not to derail but

If he responds well to Metformin, doesn't that mean he is producing insulin? Doesn't the Metformin allow your body to use the insulin you are producing more efficiently? I'm a newb here so pardon me if I'm way off.

Yep me included.

And I am with you -- if you cannot learn from a parent's example, you may still learn from their mistakes. Doesn't make the ma poor parent or bad person, either.

The primary use of metformin is to stop glucogenesis in the liver, which can lower the numbers of T1's and T2's alike, because it yields less glucose in the blood. It also does reduce insulin resistance.

I'm T2, so not intimately familiar with T1's, but T1's still in the "honeymoon phase" are still producing insulin, and can respond promisingly to oral medications at first. T1.5, or LADA is much more similar to T1 in that it attacks your pancreas and stops your body from producing insulin, but if caught early, you'll still be producing for a while after diagnosis, and so you'll still respond promisingly to medications.

There are blood tests (C-Peptide, GAD Antibody) that can differentiate between the two types before you would be able to telll by just monitoring your sugar. If you are a T1 or a T1.5, (and I'm not sure how true this is), you will likely need insulin much sooner than a T2 would, but it is possible to do without it for a short period, as your body could still be producing some of it's own.
