Newbie

I was diagnosed today with type 2 diabetes. Fasting Glucose was 382, A1C 11.7. I also have +3 in my urine.

-My Dr. put me on Glyburide 1/2 pill 2 x's a day. I am to ck my levels morning and evening.

- I am trying to accept this dx but I am overweight and consider my self a sugarholic. I have been battling a weight problem for 8 yrs. It is not so simple to just stop eating the wrong foods. I am scared and don't know if I can do this!

Thanks for listening

Jan

Welcome to the club that nobody wants to join.

Sorry to hear about the Dx, but you've found a great resource! I sure hope you can stay with us! Read around all the many threads around the forum and ask any questions you may have!

Happy to listen! That's what we do here! Hi Tenaj1! Welcome to the forum. We all, at some level were (are recovering) sugarholics. Diabetes is one of the more 'merciful' diseases you can get as you are able to directly affect it with your own actions. There is so much you can do between new diet regimens (carb reduction), finding an exercise activity you really like (biking for me) and even using insulin to help control the blood sugar. You'll be surprised that in a few months you'll be well on the way to getting healthier. You do have to choose SOME method of committing to better health. Doing 'nothing' is NOT an option.

Did your Dr. ask you to get Diabetes education classes? They can be very helpful but this forum has been my main source of info. Start reading everything you can.

The Glyburide your Dr ordered will help get the numbers under control. But you can start by taking baby steps by thinking about trying to limit 'one carb' you love today. Like if you'd normally have potatoes with dinner tonight -- choose -- for just tonight to have let's say, broccoli, instead -- or 3 small squares of cheddar cheese. And take a 15 minute walk after dinner. As a new diabetic you will learn that it's not just the sugar in sodas, candy, etc.. that's the problem -- but also any food that turns into sugar in the bloodstream -- like all the starches and most grains: potatoes, pasta, breads, cereals, and even fruits (of course cakes, cookies, etc). If you prefer to live on very little oral medications and not take insulin thru a very short needle (that actually doesn't hurt at all in my experience) then you'll need to consider cutting back on the carb intake. And if you haven't already -- start getting active too.

Even those 'baby' steps I mention above will launch you in a good direction.

Welcome. So sorry to hear of your dx... (((((Hugs))))) -- you'll make it.

If you were not scared, you'd be crazy. But I do want to emphasize something you CAN do this. Not only that, but when you do, you will feel a lot better.

Cool Hi

Welcome to the site. I understand how you feel as I fetl that way just 5 short weeks ago. I recommend that you watch your sugar and carbs, but the thing that seems to keep my BG levels down after meals is a short walk. I just walk 1/2 to 1 mile and it does an incredible job on my levels.

Good luck and YOU CAN DO IT..........

I second the walk idea. I dropped by BG 60 points with a walk yesterday.

Its been 2 yrs since I was able to exercise. I use to do aerobics twice a wk. I had problems with my legs, feet and hips had to stop. Found out I have Fibormyalgia along with arthritis in my feet, hands and back and bursitis of the hips. Since I stopped exercising I gained 70 lbs but have lost 12 lbs in the last 4 mths without trying. I new something was wrong with me.

I know I make excuses not to exercise but if I walk too much it causes pain in my feet, back and in my hips. I do walk 3 blocks Mon thru thur from the bus stop to my work then 1.5 blocks back to the bus stop. That has to account for something.

I am just thoroughly frustrated. It is not easy changing your lifestyle so quickly.

Hi again tenej1 a thought just comes to mind. At our local community center they have a club of folks in your predicament, mostly senior citizens who go on bus tours to local famous places etc etc. One of their functions is water exercises for people who cant really exercise. The folks seem to have a pretty good time and enjoy each others company with dine outs and card games etc. Have you looked into your local community for support? Like I said just a thought.

It had been suggested by 2 Drs to do water aroebics or warm water therapy. The problem is no energy or time. I work 10 hrs a day 4 days a wk and I have a 14 yr old who is involved in a lot of things. I'm his personal chauffeur. My current Rheumatologist has not agreed to the water therapy.

Why is he against the water therapy? What about just plain ol' swimming?

It's great that you're involved with your son, but what does he do the 4 days you're working? Obviously he's getting wherever he needs to go on those days & I'm sure he would understand (and probably encourage) you taking care of yourself on at least one of the day you have off, even if it meant he had to find another ride to one event or another. My mom died from complications of diabetes when I was a child & I would have gladly done anything to keep her around a bit longer.

Welcome to the forum!

Welcome to the forum. This is a great place to learn and share.
As I read the posts and responses, I detect that maybe something is missing. It seems as though someone has asked you if you wanted to have diabetes. No one asked me or I would have said NO NO NO NO! It may be time to make a decision. YES YOU CAN DO THIS. OWN WHO YOU ARE! We have diabetes and must take care of ourselves. We have no other choice. (the complications of diabetes unattended are made for us by the diease). When we all get done with all our wonderful, important, must have excuses (not just you, but all of us), there still remains the fact that we must test and monitor, maybe take meds, exercise, loose weight and eat appropriate foods. We may all fail. We may all succeed. But for now, we can only try. Make your health a priority. Maybe even as high as the family chauffeur. Blind people do not make very good chauffeurs. Well, hope I was not too hard on you. But your health IS IMPORTANT AND YOU CAN DO THIS! Find solutions. Use you 14 yr old as a resource to help you do what you need to do. Make everyday an improvement. Let's change one "sugaraholic" to a "liveaholic." I have faith in you - anyone who can raise a 14 yr old can certianly do this. Again, YOU CAN DO THIS. Welcome. Best Wishes, Larry

Don't feel too bad....it can all be very overwhelming at this stage. Educate yourself so you can take the necessary steps to regain your health. Take control and don't be a victim.
