Hello everyone i hope someone can help me understand my blood sugar reading. I had my main meal, when i was finished i started to get all hot and my face was very flushed too with a fast pulse also and felt very thirsty, i do have a sugar meter and so did a test, my reading was 331, i feel a bit of a fraud being on here as i dont think i have diabetes but had the meter when i was expecting my little girl. Thankyou granny, i just felt so bad, has made me feel better posting on here
How long after the meal did you test? Even if it was very soon after, 331 sounds awfully high. I don't think a non-diabetic would go that high after a meal no matter what they ate. Also, you said that you had a meter from when you were pregnant. Were you diagnosed with gestational diabetes then? Women who had GD are at a higher risk for developing Type 2 later on.
I would definitely mention this to your doctor and have some lab testing done.

Hi Linda its bang on perfect now, can that happen as im a bit confused. Thanks
Betty,
Welcome to the forums, when you say it's perfect now, what is it. A reading of 331 is fairly high. Did you have gestational diabetes - is that why you have the meter?
I would suggest for the next few days you test every morning before eating, then before each meal and two hours after each meal and before bed. feel free to post the results here (if posting after meal results tell us what you ate), I sure people will be happy to comment. But I would suggest you keep a record of the readings and consult your doctor.

Hi david its 5.9 on my meter now. i felt quite poorly earlier on but feel fine now. my blood sugar was quite high in pregnancy the nurse said so shes the one who advised me to keep on checking, i knew something was wrong earlier as i felt really thirsty and was very flushed is that normal? thanks
David is right, keep checking and post here. There are lots of people here that know lots about high glucose (not me, I am new here), but I PROMISE you will get good advice here.
GOOD LUCK,
By the way, I was diagnosed as a Type 2 Diabetic about 6 weeks ago and it is not so bad. It is something that can be handled easily with just a little will power.

Welcome Betty
Can you tell us what you ate and drank during the meal? Most of us here have found success by eating frequent, small quantities of food throughout the day. We typically have incororated more green, leafy vegetables into our diet and reduced our intake of carbs. We test as David suggested and "eat to our meters".
You may also enjoy the dieting and nutrition section of the forum, there's a lot of great information there.
Congratulations on being pro active and I look forward to hear how you're doing.

Hi i had eaten steak, potatoes and brocolli. I dont eat cakes or any sweet things at all. Im a bit worried that i went so flushed and thirsty is that normal do you know? Thankyou
yes, what happens is you eat, your blood sugar rises and then it comes back down to some sort of level....varies greatly depending on if you have diabetes or how well ou can control it or what you ate.
I would go see a doctor, people with gestational diabetes often end up with diabetes. also the reading was just super high, dangerous level. a normal number fasting is under 100. a normal number after food is up for debate, but defintely anything over 180 is not a good number.
do not let this go. please see a doctor and keep us posted. you should be tested.

Betty, I don't like to be the bearer of bad news and I'm not a doctor -- none of us are -- but feeling heavy thirst is one of the '#1' signs of T2 diabetes.. Feeling flush in the face after a large meal is like the #4 main symptom. Others are urinating 'large' quatities -- more than usual even when you haven't drunk a lot of liquid. Tingliness in hands and feet or burning in feet at night is another. Fatigue thru middle of day is another.
No normal person ever reaches over 300 in their blood glucose. And it would be very rare that a pre-diabetic would reach that # either. There is no doubt in my mind (as a T2 who's talked to his Dr. a lot but I'm NOT a doctor) that you have full blown T2 diabetes now and need to ask you doctor what the next steps are. Don't wait. It will be a big life change - but 'very doable'. You'll see. If you let it go 'hoping' it's not the real thing -- then you stand the chance of getting terrible heart disease and problems with your eyes and hands and feet that are sometimes irreversible. Not trying to scare you but just trying to have you understand that this is a very serious disease and VERY controllable. But if you don't control it it can have 'very bad effects' on you. Not worth playing around with.
OF course -- see your doctor and ask his/her opinion. Tell him about the numbers you're seeing in your blood glucose. You have a meter?
The steak and brocolli are next to no carbs.. But the potatoes were full of carbs and most likely the cause at that meal. Unless you drank a sugared drink too like iced tea or soda, lemonade, etc.
There's a lot of support here for you. Keep us posted. But get to the doctor's as quick as possible. And get a meter if you don't have one so you can tell your doc what your numbers are running on a daily basis.
This will NOT just go away... Please don't believe that it will. And even 'one' number over 300 (if you tested with clean hands) is an indicator of the disease (maybe in early stages but OF the disease without question) - best to test twice though to make sure the number was accurate and not a fluke.
Hi bettyrubble! Hello good evening and welcome to the forum, so far you have been given some very good advice, my suggestions are use it wisely.
I'll just like to endorse all what fellow poster NewdestinyX said, it makes good sense. (Quote NewdestinyX) "OF course -- see your doctor and ask his/her opinion. Tell him about the numbers you're seeing in your blood glucose meter"
Lets see what your Dr says, if and when you go to see he/she.
All the best for now.

Many people will try to tell you what you can’t eat with diabetes.
Most will be well-meaning.
Rather than compounding the problem by telling you what you should
eat, I’d recommend a simpler method, eat by your meter.
