I've been taking Metformin for a year now, since I was diagnosed. Twice the doctor has increased it due to creeping bg's upon waking. Now it's doing it for the third time. I still watch my diet closely, I'm not overweight, I exercise. Why is this happening? Oh, it goes without saying, but my A1c also goes up. Everything is fine for awhile, but then.......there it goes.

Type 2 is progressive - by the time you are diagnosed, they say, you have already lost something like half of your beta cells. Add that it takes a long time to diagnose in most cases you might have lost more beta cells than they think. Are you just taking Metformin alone? Avandia with Metformin works better. Avandia has some things about that are not as good as Metformin, but it works with Metformin. They don't do the same thing for you.

It is part of the disease for you to progress to different meds and possibly to insulin. Sadly, that is just the way it is. What are your doses now?

I had the problem when I was first diagnosed of the morning reading not coming down even though I was on a high dose of Metformin. I needed the addition of Pioglitazone and Gliclazide to do the trick.

Thanks to you both for answering my post. I take 850 mg. of Metformin twice a day. I'll see what the doc thinks about adding another med to my already growing list. Thanks again.
