View Full Version : Insulin Test = 2.0... is this bad or good???

Hello again;

I recently went to the doctor and was told I'm glucose intolerant (I think he means "Impaired Glucose Tolerance," but he didn't elaborate... either way, it's somewhere on the road above normal). However, interestingly enough, because I low-carb under normal circumstances, my HbA1c was quite good at 5.1. Likewise, my fasting glucose level was 80! Can't complain about those levels!

What's strange, up 'till the day of the test, my FBGs have been in the 90s. And, no, my meter was not reading incorrectly. I know this because AFTER the day of the test, and ever since (for the last week), it's been anywhere from 80 to 88. Note, this happened just a couple of days after my "high-carb" experiments (see earlier posts). Some sort of rebound effect? I just don't get it...

Anyway, what I really don't get is my fasting insulin level, which was 57.6 back in November, has dropped all the way to 2.0! Last check (about 2 months ago) was 3.9 so it's still dropping. The range it's suppose to be within is 6.0 to 26.0 (according to this lab anyway...). My family doctor didn't say it was a problem (although I haven't talked directly to him about it yet, but through his nurse, he said come back again in 3 months, and no need to go back on meds or anything like that). Should I be concerned about it going so low? I've been low-carbing most of the time for the last couple of years, even prior to being diagnosed with insulin resistance back in November (based on the 57.6 reading), and of course, the subsequent glucose intolerant diagnosis. Any thoughts?

Thanks again for your help!

Kevin - just trying to make sense of it all... :dontknow:

...I understand your fasting insulin level is a response to the glucose output of your liver...does this mean my liver is just putting out a little bit of glucose when it kicks in? Although my fasting BG was 80... still seems like very little insulin even for that level... just don't know enough about this whole feedback system yet...
