What is the highest blood sugars a non diabetic child can have? I did my sons just for the fun of it and 2 hours after super it was 8.0. I cleaned his hands and did it again and it was 8.3. After a bit of running around (about half hour later) I checked again and it was 7.8. Needless to say I'm a bit concerned...so I've come to you all. He has had a few other symptoms that I hadn't put together and it maybe nothing, but....any advise or infor would be greatly appreciated.

Hmm, I think the highest for a child is the same as what the highest should be for a non-diabetic adult. I think if you really want peace of mind, I'd make an appointment to see his physician :call:. Then you can either deal with the situation or put it behind you.
Keep us posted :)

I went thru this with one my neices and tested her because she would go to the bathroom a lot. After she had eaten a lot of candy, she went to 128. The thing is that a healthy pancreas simply shoots out insulin to automatically cover that. I would just watch all, if any, symptoms.

I called my pharmacists (his daughter is on the pump) and asked him how high a non diabetic child can go in two hours after a meal and he said as high as 11 (198). I was concerned becuase lately he's been very emotional and crying at the drop of a hat and can't explain why. Which, if he was having problems with his sugars would be understandable. I'm going to do a fasting sugar tomoro morning (he's already eaten today) and see what I come up with. I still think I will make an appointment though.

I am having the same problems with my 12 year old son. He has fasting sugars some days of in the 130's and 2 hour post meal's also 130's to 160's However some times he has fasting sugars in the 90's. He is in the bathroom every hour. He drinks water like a fish. He has complained of blurry vision (checked out okay at the eye Dr). He eats like a horse and has lost a few pounds. He has seen an ENDO (last fall) and had an A1C of 5.2. The endo did his testing and all came back okay. I check him every so often and he does still run high some times. I was able to grab a Home A1C about a month ago from walmart and his A1C came back at 5.6. I am in a fight with my wife, because I want him to see someone else again. My wife is telling me to leave the kid alone.
Plus the kicker is that he has been an honor roll kid for the past 5 years and this year he is getting C's and D's. And I am just wondering if that also has something to do with his blood sugar.
Sorry for the long story, but what I was trying to get to is I would be concerned also and keep on top of things. Who knows we might just be catching it at a very early stage.

My son just turned 11 so I can relate. I test him every once in awhile with my meter, but lately I've been thinking about testing him more often.
The dropping grades could be unrelated.

Pre-Teens/teens, will drive our sugars wild!! LOL
Whenever my daughter gets real thirsty, I pinch her finger, she just rolls her eyes... LOL.
Peace of mind for me, she understands.

My daughter is 12 and we have been trying very hard to get her blood sugars under control for almost 3 years. We just can't get her numbers under control.
She does sneak food alot but it is not like we restrict her diet:goodnight?
Any advise on how to get her to take responsiblity and gain control?

Liz, how old is your son? I just ask because my youngest of three boys is 14, and they all went through stages where they were quite emotionally, um, volatile. I write a developmental column in a parenting magazine too, so know this is pretty common. 18 months, 4 and preteen (for my guys 11-12, which I did NOT expect!) can be pretty rough going for a while. If your son comes up normal for diabetes and/or other medical problems (and here's hoping he does), you might be just looking at a high-stress stage of his development.
You might also check for LOW BG with these unexplained crying jags. This runs in my family, independent of diabetes, so I recognized the first time my oldest son was weeping uncontrollably on the couch after more or less skipping lunch. I waved a plate of cheese and crackers under his nose, he scarfed them up and was instantly fine.
After Aaron was diagnosed, I checked my own BG the next time I had that shaky-elbows-get-out-of-my-way-I-have-to-eat-NOW feeling and sure enough, I was 3.9. Just a tiny bit low, and it felt pretty nasty. A bad diabetic low must be no fun at all.

Bibleman John, why don't you post a little more information about your daughter in a new thread? Let us know what her current treatment plan is, her BG ranges, and a bit more about the problems you are encountering?

Liz I was just wondering if you found out anything? My son goes to the DR Friday. I happen to be at a walmart that I don't use and found a home choice Home A1C and tested my son again. That one came back 5.8 So it is up from April. I know those are not the best thing to base this off of,but I think that I am catching this very early in the starting stage. I was just thinking about your little guy and was wondering if you found out anything.
Hey jeggeman, how much are those home a1c tests, i was thinking about picking one up to check mine again later this month.

Well they don't make them anylonger. The one's in the stores (if you can find them) are under $20.00 depending on what store you get them at. You may be able to find them at a CVS or Walgreens. Maybe a walmart here or there. If you do find one, make sure you check the exp. date and that they are not expired.

Hey Jim, I have tested him a few other times. He doesn't believe me now when I say it doesn't really hurt..lol. His numbers have fallen into the regular ranges but he is still a little emotional and his tummy has been hurting for about the last two weeks. I'm starting to believe him and think I'll make an appointment. The reason I say "starting to believe him" is that I take a number of meds, so does my hubby and daughter. I wasn't sure he was really not feeling well or just feeling left out of the medication bizz. I think he may really have something going on. I just don't have anything concret to tell the doc. I guess we'll just have to play it by ear.
