Columbia Univerisity is announcing that they have found how to evaluate beta cell production with a non-invasive PET scan. They believe this will enable early detection and the ability to tell progress much better. There are no curent test that really are that accurate that give this information.
Downside - who will be able to afford a PET scan without the doctor suspecting diabetes in the first place. Without insurance it is out of the question - with HMO it is probably just as out of the question. But,it is a step in the right direction.

Good thing it's a "non-evasive test"; you don't want those tricky Beta cells hidding or getting away!;)

Ahhhhh...another diabetic karate-ka I assume with a handle like, "shotokan".
Ive studied for years, currently am 1st kyu, have been for like ten years, maybe one day I'll get around to heading to Ottawa for my shodan test when Sensei Tanaka is back in the country.
You belong to the JKA?

Hi Phranky,
Yes. I'm 54 years old and I've practiced karate off and on since I was about 16 years old (I wasn't diagnosed T1 until I was 25). I've been out of it for 10 years or so, but I still do round-kicks to close cupboard doors when my wife isn't around.
My sensei was Ray Dalke, who learned from Hidetaka Nishiyama, who learned from Gichin Funakoshi. I trained a few times with Nishiyama. While I trained under sensei Dalke his club was JKA. Like you, my progress was pretty slow, and I only got as far as Shodan. I'm happy to say that my Shodan certificate is from the JKA. I hate all of the politics and the splintering of the JKA.
I really love Shotokan karate. I can't imagine practicing any other style. I'm going to have to start up again soon while I still can. There is a JKA club near me.
