Tattoos?

Can diabetics get tattoos? I have been wanting to get one on my shoulder or ankle. Anything special I should do before? Thanks!

As long as you are well controlled, I wouldn't think it would be a problem. You should heal just fine.

i have 6 tattoos. but i got them done befor i became diabetic....make sure your sugars are under control for the healing time

I have two tattoos, both of which I had done after dx. One on my ankle and one on my shoulder. The one on my ankle took about 3x as long to heal as the one of my shoulder. Keep in mind that the farther away from the heart an tattoo or injury is the longer it may take to heal and thus put you at higher risks for infection. This is especially true if you have poorer circulation which may not be evident until a problem occurs.

Make sure you artist is reputable, ask to see any licensing and photos of work they have done in the past. Some artist will allow you to pay extra for new bottles of ink to be opened for your work to assure the ink is sterile.
