If I have to have bread, should I eat wheat or white? There doesn't look to be a noticeable difference on the label (carbs, sugars, etc.)

I can't see where you would "have" to have either. But, that is not the question. Setting aside the diabetics issue I would say the wheat. Really it comes down the the kind of grain. You hear more about whole grain as being preferred. This is a general health situation - if you are type 2 then neither is the answer. If you are type 1 type then it is neither also, but you are in a different position where you can if you do it correctly.

My Endo told me to eat wheat. The fiber carbs make a diff I was told. She said to keep my carbs at a min of 99g a day. She is always asking if I am eating whole wheat products, when I say yes, she says good. I will ask when I go in what makes it important. I just have always liked wheat better so I have never ask why.

Suprisingly wholemeal (rather than wholegrain) bread has a slightly higher GI index (causing the BS to rise faster) than white!.
According to the G1 data base the GI value of
white bread (american) is 70
Baguette, white, plain (France) 95 !!
wholemeal bread (American) 73.
Cracked wheat kernel 75% bread (Canada) 48.

Rye bread varies tremendouslybetween 41 and 61 but again that with whole grains tending to be lower. Oat bran bread is fairly low at 44.

The lowest GI I could find was Coarse barley kernel bread with 75% kernels with a GI of 28.

I think the answer has to be that bread with a percentage of whole grain is much better and that it is OK and interesting to vary the type of grain.

On a personal note we make our own bread using a mixture of wholemeal and mixed grain flour and the result is tasty though fairly dense so for the same weight I could have 1 slice of our 'good' bread and half a French baguette which doesn't seem fair!

I've mostly eaten white bread, ain't dead yet. :D I do occasionally,
my fav. is Dempsters wholewheat brown bread with flax but I noticed
it has more calories per slice then the white I was eating. But
it tasts better. :flute:
