Just curios - what tests did your doctor perform to ascertain that you are diabetic? I have read online that it takes two fasting tests, a glucose tolerance test, and a random blood sugar test in order to declare someone as being diabetic. Do all doctors really do this? Did you have all these tests done?

I was told i would have 2 test ,but was confirmed after the first test ,maybe because it was very high.

According to ADA guidelines a fasting plasma glucose level >126 mg/dL (7.0 mmol/l) or a random plasma glucose >200 mg/dl (11.1 mmol/l) meets the threshold for the diagnosis of diabetes. If there is no clear reason for the hyperglycemia then the test must be repeated on a subsequent day to confirm diagnosis. If however other diabetic symptoms are present then there is no need to confirm according to the guidelines. If you are positive on the above tests there is no need for any glucose challenge test.

I just had a fasting test becuase when I went into the doctors I was spilling so much sugar in my urine that she asked me if there was a chance I was pregnant...had gestational diabetes. Oh, with the fasting she did an a1c and it was in the 16's. So I guess the a1c proved what the fasting showed and that was good enough although we pretty much knew that with the urine test.

before i went in to the doctor - i was always thirsty, and alway having to run to the bathroom. having checked my bg level on my moms meter, it was in the 300's. the next day at the doctors office, it was around the 340's. neither were fasting though - random.
about a week after my initial visit to the doctors office, i went in for blood work. my fasting was around 144.
the follow up visit, i though they would do more tests - such as a glucose tolerance test - but i suppose with the symptoms mentioned above and constantly high running sugars, there was no need for further tests.

A friend did a random test....and it was 23.9 mmols I knew then!
Then I had a fasting blood glucose which was 9mmols. Combined with significant weight loss (or on its own) the Dr confirmed the diagnosis.
Other symptoms were present, but didn't join the dots until afterwards.
