For my own information, are many of you involved with organizations such as JDRF? If so, what kind of involvement (and if not, is there a reason)?

I hope all is well.

Sorry, for you that may not know: "JDRF" is the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

I've volunteered for them here in Ottawa at the Bike Relay thing.......

Sometimes as a type one I feel forgotten, as the Diabetes Association seems to focus mostly on Type 2s.........

At least with the JDRF, it's mostly about Type 1.

I use to always participate in their local Bike-A-Thon. It was always a huge success in that during that event I would bike 50+ miles in the day. There was even one guy that would do around 400 miles in the day.

However, they discontinued the local bike-a-thon I think from lack of support. I was upset since during that even I would raise $1000 easily as a kid. Heck, I got 3 bikes out of it and a few other items for hitting certain raise limits.

I don't think our local JDF chapter even does anything anymore, which is upsetting, if they even still exist.

For you (and anyone else out there that may be interested in getting involved with a local chapter - the site has a lot of information about research, etc. also):

I am part of a study, in the local Children's Hospital in Pitsburgh, which is through that. So I'm the Ginny Pig in this whole thing. :T

Here in Australia, the JDRF does "walk for the cure" each year. I havent been able to do it the last few years because of work, but it is always a huge event. The other association here for people with diabetes is Diabetes Australia, but I am not a member as it also seems to focus primarily on T2.

The Walk is definitely the biggest fundraiser. The majority of the donations go towards actual research. The organization gets a lot of respect from Legislators. Anyway, I find the JDRF website very informative - you can stay updated on new research and technology, etc.

I'm kindof involved in the UK org, I'm hoping to be in their next newsletter promoting type 1 and exercise/sports. JDRF UK have an annual research meeting too where there is a guest speaker researcher explaining/updating on current research, but have never been to one.

JDRF is at least specific to only type 1. Whereas most other orgs are very much involved in type 2 with only a small amount of info/promotion on type 1.

When I lived in Canada, I was quite involved with the Canadian Diabetes Association--particularly fundraising efforts and a youth group. They put on a series of seminars every year that I used to attend and really enjoyed.

Here in Japan, I have not been involved in anything, but would love to get involved with the Canadian Diabetes Association when I return to Canada.

Nope don't donate/suport any of them, as I do not think there will ever be a cure it's just throwing good money after bad as far as I am concerned.

My Daughter just gave me a hug and went flying out the door
hollering that she and 3 of her Friends will be rowing a big boat
(probably a canoe ;) )tomorrow at 6:00 in the morning(yuk)to
make money for People with Diabetes. Haven't a clue if it is being
done through the JDRF, or the CDA or her College or her Friends University,
or our City, etc. I'll find out later probably. As long as it is Help for Diabetics
in some way. Hopefully research towards a cure. :)

Well, whether you choose to support JDRF or ADA or whatever with money (or more importantly time/effort) is a personal choice. However, I think that your attitude towards finding a cure (and whatever might improve quality of life for people with diabetes along the path to that cure) is a bit much. Can you really say that you are unimpressed or affected in a beneficial way by the money and/or research (i.e. treatment - insulin, finger sticks, pumps, etc.) that have risen from those organizations? Sorry in advance for my tone. We have to stay together in this cause.

Well Sue, hopefully the Bad aren't keeping it all and do donate some of it towards a Cure. The Scientists and some Docs. do seem to be doing some needed work towards a Cure. If it's not for our time then in time for the younger people. I'm actually getting more hopeful for Diabetics. I used to
be only 10% hopeful, now I'm up to about 14%. Not bad.

Sue, I can understand your feelings there. I've had Diabetes for almost 25 years & was told they'd find a cure in the first ten. It's not that I've given up hope - it just that in America, it doesn't make good "business sense" for a cure to be released (unless of course there was some way for pharmaceutical companies to capitalize on it). Not everyone agrees with my "philosophy," and I'm not asking them to. It's just my personal opinion & observation.

If I did donate, it would be my time & effort (not necessarily money). I currently enjoy donating whole blood & platelets, and volunteering for Cancer related functions. I know that this may sound "cheeky" to some, but I find it more rewarding to help Cancer patients...
