I've visited the forums in the past, but this is my first post. There doesn't seem to be a lot of information for Type 1 diabetics who are pregnant. So far my sugars have been really tight, but my nurse tells me this is because growing a baby takes so much energy. I'd love to hear from other women going through this or who have been through it before. Basically just looking for a shoulder to lean on, someone to give a bit of advice, what to expect etc. I already had my 6 week ultrasound to confirm viability and we have a heartbeat, so that was a huge relief. Just finishing week 7 now and deep (DEEP) in the throes of morning sickness.

Congrats!!! :congrats:
I went through 2 pregnancies being a T1 but one was on MDI and the other I was on a pump. The pregnancy I had with MDI was a bit challenging and I was in the hospital more than I was out. I had to go for 2 non-stress tests a week and a biophysical profile every week also. Nine times out of ten I didn't pass the tests so it required me to stay in the hospital for a 23 hour observation period. My 35 week check up showed the babies heartbeat too high and I eventually passed out after I woke up they were setting me up for a emergency c-section.
My pregnancy on the pump was great! I still had all the DR visits with the Fetal Diagnostic team but I wasn't sick and the baby was more cooperative far as the testing went.
The recommendation in that office was to deliver diabetic babies no later than 38 weeks so the plus side was we don't have to be pregnant as long. :aetsch: Also only one of my children dealt with low blood sugar at birth. She was fed right away but didn't improve so they had to start an IV. She actually didn't maintain her own levels until 6 days after she was born.

I went through it 2 years ago on my pump. It was relatively easy. I mean, I was stressed out about my sugars, but honestly, once I got through the first trimester when everything is really developing (brain, etc) I relaxed a bit. I will tell you I ended up taking TONS of insulin by the end. Your placenta makes you insulin resistant, I was on over 200 units a day by the time I delivered. I also had pregnancy induced hypertension which diabetics are more prone to get. I had to be in the hospital on bed rest 5 weeks and then I delivered a month early. Good news is my daughter was TOTALLY fine, went straight to the big girl nursery and had no blood sugar problems. I ended up with a c-section b/c the cord was wrapped around her neck. She was only 6lbs 9 oz. Anyhow, if you have more questions or just want to chat PM me. You'll be fine. My A1c was never higher than 7.2 during the whole thing. I'm actually trying to get healthy enough to have another one.....have to get my A1c down a bit. GOOD LUCK!

Thanks everyone for your responses. That diabeticmommy site is great to know about and it is encouraging to hear about other diabetic women who have had healthy pregnancies. I am on pump therapy, and my A1C is just under 7, so hopefully things will go well. This past weekend though I spiked to 15.6 mmol and now I worry that I have hurt the baby. I feel guilty about everything I do and everytime my sugar isn't completely in range. Plus, with feeling so sick, I worry that I'm not getting enough nutrients and vitamins. Boy this is hard work.
