Well We had the lab work done

I took my 12yo back to the DR for lab work today. :nurse: 9 months ago, when all the signs of the big D was seen in Andrew, I took him to get tested. All the test came back normal, with an A1C of 5.2 I continue to do some fasting readings on him with my meter, and he would be in the 90's some days, 150 to 160 other mornings. His fasting was 105 today at the DR office. I did do a home A1C on him a few months ago and it came out 5.6 or 5.8 (I can't remember) So after fighting with the wife over this (she tells me to leave him alone) I got him in for a full work up. So It will be the middle of next week before we hear anything. I hope I have just been over reacting, and not just catching this to soon. But I guess if it is the worse of the two, that we did catch it when we did. We we will just have to wait until next week. Until then keep those fingers and toes crossed until we get those results back. :deal:

I sure hope everything turns out well, Jim. At any rate, I think it's better to be proactive & safe, than nonchallant and sorry. Please continue to keep us posted!

Definately let us know what the results are. I too worry about my son but so far everything is normal. I may still take him in for a work up too but right now we're just trying to get finished school. He has 3 weeks to go and he was done (mentally) a couple weeks ago.

I think I have to agree with your wife... Unless, he's showing a lot of symptoms and you've tested him (once in a while) with abnormal results... I wouldn't put the poor kid through all that. That may put unneeded stress on you both.

I agree about the stress bit, but I don't think with those types of readings, plus an a1c over 5.5 (the true cut off of normal) they are unjustified. A fasting reading of 105 is too high- it falls in the impaired glucose tolerance range.

Hi Jim

I sure hope all goes well for your son. I find it hard enough having to deal with this myself at my age (48) that I can't even imagine my child getting this disease.

My highest respect goes out to all the parents who's child is diagnosed with this, especially at such a young age. I've never known anyone personally who's child was diagnosed. Thank goodness for that.

Since diabetes is on both sides of my daughter's family, her dad's side and mine, I have told her she should get tested at least once a year during her check up. She is 28 now. Both sides of our family have adult onset Type 2. Do you think that is often enough for her to be tested? She is very healthy and in great shape, works out all the time and eats well, so hopefully she will be able to avoid this.

Jim, I agree wholeheartedly with what Dew said. I feel like it's better to be safe now than sorry later. Hope all goes well and that you were just overreacting. Of course, when you are a parent, that's what you do best: overreact. Good luck and let us know how it all comes out.

Well she sent a paper showing his A1C is 5.8 but said that his insulin level is within normal range. I don't know the numbers from his C-pap test yet, just that she claims they are within normal range. I am going to see if I can get a copy of those as well.


So lets see if I can remember. Last year about this time his A1C was 5.2, then in March his home A1C was 5.6 and now 5.8.



I hope to get the hard copy of his labs this week or sometime next week and go from there.

Insulin levels can still be well within range and you be a diabetic. I'd be slightly concerned with that rising A1C though. That shouldn't be normal unless he is either less active now or started eating candy all the time keeping his BG elevated.

I am not sure, she just sent that all was norman and gave me his A1C. I won't be able to get up to get a copy of it until next week some time.

Thanks All. I won't be able to go get the hard copy of the lab until middle of next week. I am not sure what they all did (test wise) but like I said Andrew does have all the signs but the weight loss. He has dropped a few pounds, but nothing major.





It is amazing that after all these years with me having the big D, you would think I would have it programed in my brain what to ask the DR and everything else but I forgot. So once I get more info I will keep you all posted.
