What do you all drink to soothe a bad cough? I used to drink gatorade to break it up but..... Ive drank water all day and it isnt helping and Dr is on vacation until next Tues.

This sounds silly, but the one thing I do that helps somewhat is, eat hot peppers or pickles. I still just drink lots of water, but when the cough makes my chest hurt, the peppers work for awhile.

There is a product you can buy at most pharmacies called Shower Soothers which helps break up congestion. It seems to work for both cough and sinus congestion. It is a tablet that you put on the floor of the shower under the spray. and then you stand in the shower for the steam inhalation. they're pricey, but they work.

Otherwise, have you tried hot peppermint tea?

Thanks guys, I jsut remembered when you mentioned tea that a friend of mine gave me hot tea with lemon in it and it soothed it right away. I just want to sleep tonight, I was up all night with my 3 year old whom I got the cough from.

Penny, Do you mean like green chili or like a jalipeno? ouch! lol.

No, I am too much of a sissy for those. I get the pepper rings or hot pickle mix from Vlasic or whatever. When I have a cold is the only time I can even take this heat.

Jaclyn...........hot tea works well for me, along with putting some Vick's Vapor rub on my chest.

Hope you're feeling better today!

Speaking of Vicks!:argh: My husband uses it on his toenails, for a fungus (it works). The last time I bought a jar of it, I paid $1.59 (sticker still on bottle). Yesterday, I went to buy another, same size......$5.49!

Had a terrible cough after my operation. Nurses told me to keep on drinking. They pushed fluids so much I thought I would drown! I guess it helped? If you cough up phlegm, having plenty of fluids (water is the best) will help you cough it up even more and prevent it from sticking in your throat. Not very nice.

Tea with lemon is great too!

Steam will help also! Whenever I feel my chest very congested and it feels like cobwebs inside my lungs when I breathe... a hot shower will do the trick.

Try not to lie down flat when you sleep at night. Find a big cushion (or many cushions) to elevate your head a bit. Make sure you are comfy and not breaking your neck. Trying to sleep sitting down will only make it worse as you will be extremely uncomfortable.

Hope this helps!

Hello again!

I hope you feel better soon! It's absolutely awful to have a big bad cold at this time of the year. And diabetes has a bad habit of interferring when we are sick. The joy! Lots of vitamin C!! Take good care and let's hope it won't last. As soon as you will be able to sleep better at night you'll get some serious rest and the cold will be history.

I've seen a product in my local drug store called 'Diabetictussin', which is a cough syrup for diabetics without the normal corn syrup or whatever it is they put in it.

You should look for it.

More and more we see meds with no sugar added. I think it's great!
