I started Lantus on 06/17, but haven't seen any difference in my sugar reading. Does it take a while to kick in?

Normally you see some result within an hour but it takes 3 days for effects to settle. You will need to increase the dose every few days until you can see it having the effect you want. You're best doing this under proper supervision if this is your first time on insulin.

How often are you testing? When are you testing? What numbers are you getting when you test?

I've gone from 10units to 15units with no change in readings, will call my MD tomorrow with the results.Thanks

I started on 15, I think. My doctor told me to call every 3 days with my readings, and he would tell me to raise it. This lasted until it was at 70 units, then he added the Novolog. It took a couple of weeks to notice any real difference.

Your dose may be to low. When I started on Lantus my DR started me on 10 units, and I went up to 110 units a day. Are you taking any other insulin to cover your meals ?

I'm up to 80 units a day, It seems to work for about 4-5 days and then the reading so up. I wonder why it works at first and then stops. Any help would be appreciated.

It may be that your pancreas is backing off on insulin production no that it no longer feels the need to work flat out. Once your body gets used to normal bg levels it might start up again so keep testing.

Are you taking any other meds with it? Lantus alone will do you no good. You have to have something to help with your mealtimes....whether it is an oral med or rapid acting insulin. Lantus fixes your fasting sugars and will keep you down whether you eat or not, but if you eat and don't have something else on board to get you through your mealtime spikes, Lantus will just hold your sugar wherever it lands after eating. Does that make sense?

I have to take Humalog at every meal to take care of the mealtime spikes aside from the 30 units of Lantus. Lantus with oral meds didn't do any good until my M.D. added Humalog. I used to take Glyburide and then to Glucovance until the oral meds were no longer effective. Only oral meds I take now for diabetes is Metformin
