Can you imagine what the world would look like if all of us diabetics needed dogs to alert us of our blood sugars?

Dang stupid cats. I try to teach them to dial 911 and all they do is chew on the phone cord making the phone not work. Hmmmm, maybe I should get a dog.

He looks mad, like they are withholding his dog food till his picture is taken.

Looks like he is saying "I saved this guys life and all I got was this stupid medal!" He's still a cute dog though!

OMG that is funny! If he could talk I'm sure he would say, "Where's the beef?"

Two of my cats, Brandy and Sidney, were VERY good at letting me know when my blood sugar was low. Brandy didn't even have to be in the room but when she sensed it was low, she had a loud meow that would let me know that I needed to do something quickly. The last time she warned me was the Sunday night before I put her to sleep. While in the insulin reaction I could see that she was breathing very fast, like Lexi did when his lungs were filled with fluids.
One reason I've considered adopting another cat is in hopes that it will also learn to warn me when my blood sugar is low.

Are there actually animals specifically designed to help a diabetic when they need it?

I was wondering that myself and why this specific diabetic needed a special dog.

They had a show on DLife that had a dog trainer on the show. She trained dogs to know when their owner was having a Hypo and to react to it. It was only about a 5min interview, so they did not go over much of the in's and out's of the training, but did say they had a waiting list of 2 or 3 years to get a dog trained.
Now as for this thread, my cats have woke me up from sleeping when I was low before. It happened twice, not sure if they could tell I was low, or they just woke me up.

My dog lets me know when I'm low and need to check. Then, if I am low, he won't leave my side until I run him off. LOL. He's very protective.

The first time I found out my dog was able to sense this...........she stopped my daughter and I from walking out the door........she got between us and the door and barked, and barked. I'd move left, to go around her, and she would go to her right. She would not let us out, and she would not stop barking.
My daughter finally told me to check my bs. I said, "we are late, let's go."
Tara told me to check my bs. Meantime the dog is still barking in front of the door.
Can you all guess????????? My bs was 45!!!!!!
I could have killed my daughter and I. I am soooooo grateful for that dog. Unfortunately, she is VERY old and has a lump on her skin that is not good. She is too old to have it removed. And, soon, like Lowell, I am going to have to say goodbye to my friend/companion.
Canine companions has been working on this since that first dog was discovered to be able to detect seizures. Epilepsy, I think. Then heart attacks.
My endo told me it was an odor they detected.....and, asked me if she could be bred. He said he needed dogs like that for a few of his patients. But. Last Hope had spayed her before I got her. What a shame. My partner and I are discussing getting another Lab. God knows, I need someone or a dog around me............I don't feel my lows.

I just read a story in my May 06' issue of Ladies Home Journal in which a type 1 diabetic from Indiana, out for a walk with his two dogs, was saved when he collapsed in the woods about a mile from his home. A sherrif who happened to be driving on the deserted road saw a light shining in a field. When he approached, he saw one dog laying on top of the man's chest and the other sitting next to him holding the flashlight in his mouth. The sherrif performed CPR on the man and he was transported to the hospital. He woke from a diabetic coma the next afternoon.
Stories like these truly amaze me!

Yes, there are dogs trained for this, for diabetics who have lost the ability to "feel" an extreme hypo.
Hopefully, I never need one.

Maybe I can use this as an excuse when I tell my Dad I'm getting a dog. He says I don't need another mouth to feed but I have this feeling a dog around her will relieve some of my stress.
