Hello, I am relatively new to the forum, I have a major problem with my endo. I ask for the pump, and he says NO, that I am not a good canidate for it, and all I am doing is fighting the lows and/or the highs. One A1c will be in the 14 range then the next would be in the 5's or 6's (because of all the lows). I have looked into getting another endo, but 75% of NON-teaching endo's are in one practice and they will not allow me to go to a different one in their office and the ones that do the teaching are not accepting new patients for a questionable amount of time. I have almost gave up on trying to get the sugars to a normal range for it is impossible to do so, and it is so fustrating. I use almost 30 units of Humalog per day and almost 80 units of NPH a day, and it is getting to a point where I can not do it anymore, for 24 years fighting the sugars (since I was 3) is getting harder and harder as the years go bye:confused:

you definatly need a new doctor....80 units of nph and 30 units of humalog oh man thats alot of insulin....that is probably why you are always low...how are you on so much i dont understand...do you eat alot during the day...actually if you use that much insulin i dont know it the pump can hold that much insulin for three days...i know the paradigm definatly cant since it only can hold 170 units for three days maybe the 508...thats 330 units of insulin in three days...wowwww ...im using nothing compared to that!! and i thought i was on alot!! i use maybe 35-40 units the most in a day on the pump

If your dr. will not let go on the pump. Then ask him if you can use lantus instead of nph.

Lantus (http://www.lantus.com/) they say last 24 hours. Where nph is around 12hours.
Lantus would be the next best thing to the pump. Call your dr. and see what he thinks about lantus.

When going on the pump you normally take less insulin than you do by injection.

I'm like gina using around 30units a day.

Your taking 30units of humalog a day? Thats when you just eat right?

What is your Insulin to carb ratio?

Wow, you guys are scaring me now. I'm pumping ~ 55 units of Humalog a day. BUT...my last A1C was 5.5 wooohooo!! Only been on the pump for about 6 months and the numbers don't lie. ---Cront

55 units wowwww....i am averaging anywhere between 25-35 units....i also dont want to gain any weight either when i was on insulin shots i was averaging 35 just on nph alone not counting humalog so being on the pump has actually lowered my doses...which makes it easier for me to lose weight :)not that i am huge i just dont want to gain any more than what i have gained already being on insulin....my last A1c was 7.2 :( but im still new to the pump ...i finally have gotten adjusted to it...my next one should be lower
