Hello! I'm happy to be connected to others that understand what it is like to live with diabetes.

I'm Lisa (39) with type 2 diabetes. My five year old has type 1 diabetes (diagnosed at 19 months). My husband (35) is participating in a natural history (of diabetes) clinical trial. He has tested positive for 3 out of 4 type 1 antibodies with an impaired fasting glucose of 104. The researchers told us today that they believe that he is high risk for developing type 1 (1.5) within 5 years and that he may be exhibiting type 2 insulin resistance right now. I guess type 1.5 or LADA is a slow progressing type 2 that eventually becomes insulin dependent. Only our 3 year old is negative for diabetes antibodies right now. We all have our different issues. I'm looking forward to discussing some of them within the different forums. Thanks for being here.

Hi Lisa. We are glad to have you here with us. Jump in anywhere and everywhere. We are a fairly decent, if not dysfunctional group around here. LOL.

Close ... LADA is a "slow progressing" type 1.

Thank you for the clarification. I have a lot to learn. Can those with the Type 1 antibodies for LADA also be insulin resistant in the early stages like a Type 2 diabetic? I read that not being insulin resistant is typical of early LADA. Try to figure out the best way to treat my husband at this stage.

It must be very hard to have 3 out of 4 of you dealing with this . . .

But the silver lining is this . . . you can stock the house with only good, diabetic-approved food. My mom is diabetic and my stepdad is not so he tends to keep ice cream and cookies and all kinds of stuff she can't eat in the house and she gives into temptation a lot and eats it. I also noticed that when my boyfriend would eat lots of bad stuff, I would join in. When we don't hang out, I eat a lot better without him around.

You can also get active as a family. Take family walks, go biking, rollerblading, whatever. It not only helps everyone's health but brings the family unit closer together.

Lex,

Great suggestions! We have cleared our kitchen of all processed, white, sugary junk. My husband used to be a chef. Our meals are actually healthier and taste better than before. Because we actually have to think about it!

We joined our local sports center, doing cardio and weights. We have a Tae Bo video at home if we can't get to the gym. I have lost 12 lbs. in the last month. My husband is getting his belly down. It's very exciting. We have had the worst habits for so long and our kids were starting to adopt the sugar cravings and refined carb lifestyle. Now I am a seeing a shift toward health and it is so improving our entire quality of life. Since we are all doing it, we motivate each other. Thanks for the ideas.

This is so awesome! I'd really like to get on this type of schedule with my husband including the exercising. Neither my husband or I are motivated at the time. Can we come and live with you?

Anyway, thanks to you, I've finally found out what Type 1.5 means.

Keep up the good attitude and... WELCOME again!
