Theres no doctor to call and I very much doubt this warrants the emergency room so heres the story:
I had a huge breakfast today and didnt take as much insulin as I should have. About a unit less. I expected to have high BG before lunch, but when I checked it was 5.4, so I ate a large sized sub and didnt take any insulin. I planned on checking about an hour later, but completely forgot as I felt fine. Now, 6 hours later, without taking any insulin I checked my BG expecting around 15-20. It was 5.4.
I don't understand how this is possible, and I don't want to talk my long acting insulin tonight as I'm scared of a low or something! Help?
How long have you had diabetes? Could it be a "honeymoon' effect? have you done any exercise today? yard work?

It sounds like you may be in the honeymoon phase still....I understand your concern over taking NPH, as it does have a peak & could cause a nighttime low, but if you go without insulin, your sugar could go up....In a way, "honeymooning" can be frustrating, because it hinders the routine, so to speak. Not sure if you should take the long acting or not....If you do, you might want to at least eat something with it, so you don't drop too low. Sorry I'm not more help. :(

no work of any kind, and I've had diabetes since August 2005.
It's not unheard of to have your honeymoon 18 months out, and you are well within that range.
Here's where it gets complicated: You are supposed to take your meds, and correct as needed. But, if it were me, I'd probably skip the long-acting, plan on not sleeping too well and checking my sugars every couple hours. If they started to take off on me, I'd correct with fast-acting insulin. But that's just me. Whatever you decide, TEST TEST TEST and talk to your doctor ASAP.

Good point, Duck. You're definitely right about testing, testing testing, and correcting with short acting if need-be....
Maybe setting alarms will help, too (in waking up).

I dunno if thers a god**** thing that can wake me once I fall asleep. Heh. Ill make sure to test, I just ate a bowl of macaroni so I figure thatll bring my sugars up enough for long acting?

I have had similar situations and I am not honeymooning, at least I don't think so :) . It's a little freaky when you don't get the results that you are used to, or know you should be, but that can be diabetes at times, and you handled it well.
Please don't say GD. Any other swear word is fine by me, but not that one.

Maybe because what you ate was all high gi and hasn't lasted long in your system. The carbs in white bread just drop after a few hours....I would have some milk or something when you go to bed if you are worried.

I've not taken fast acting insulin in 3 days! My blood sugars are between 5-8! Freaky stuff going on here.

Whew. I'm glad you posted back, I was starting to worry.
Maybe you are honey-mooning. I never had one, so enjoy it while it lasts...it won't come back. Talk to your doc about this as well, they should be kept advised on this.
