View Full Version : Liver too busy for lantus?

What a night, first I woke up with bg level of 60, had enough carbs to bring me to about 120, or so I thought. I went back to sleep. An hour later I woke up and I'm 62. This time with stomach ache and after fixing the hypo I threw up. This must be the new chinese food place that me and my girl tried last night (I know chinese is bad for us but I do it once in a while and I managed to keep below 185 the whole time). She was also not feeling her best, to say the least. Now I'm up to 118 and I think I'll go try to make up some sleep soon.

At first I thought the low numbers are a result of my lantus being too high, this happened few times in the past month as my honeymoon gains strength. But when I realized I have a stomach virus, I thought maybe my liver gets busy cleaning the poisons and give up dumping glucose, like it does with alchohol. Does it happen or is it just a theory I made up and it's the lantus after all? Any other tips on how to handle this and my bg untill I'm better?

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Are you still being sick? If so, keep an eye on your bs & if needs be check for ketones. Drink plenty of fluids. Hope you feel better soon :1eye:

Sounds like a classic case of food poisoning. Illness tends to make your BG levels rise, but it can also cause them to plummet as the body uses the energy to fight the infection.

The best thing you can do is check your BG every 2 hours and drink plenty of water. If you're having trouble keeping water down, see a doctor to get some anti-vomitary tablets. I had food poisoning two weeks ago and it was so bad I couldn't even drink water without throwing up, so I had to get the tablets and after that I was 'better'.

It'll probably take about 48 hours to clear your system.

After staying in bed for few hours in too much pain to actually sleep I threw up the water I was drinking, now I'm feeling much better, I managed to drink 1/2 a litter and for now it seems like I'm keeping it down. My bg went from 120 to 170 without eating a single carb but I figured it's not that bad, I can't fix 170 anyway because 1u will take me to about 60 and I can't see myself able to fix it. I'll keep a close watch on my levels and see where it's heading. I hope the better feeling isn't temporary and my body is mostly over it.

By the way my girlfriend is 100% over it and just tired from lack of sleep at this point. This is so unfair

Thanks for the help guys.

Food poisoning could also prevent you from digesting your carbs so you could end up overdosing on the rapid acting. All in all it's best to avoid food poisoning.:puke:

When I can't keep food down, I used to drink gatorade That was bfore I was daignosed. I just looked up the Nutrional Data for it (and although I am type 2) and it doesn't look too bad to me. (As a type 2, I was told to count carbs.)

Hope you feel better soon!

Given that Gatorade is a hypo treatment, I certainly wouldn't recommend drinking it whilst ill. Your BGs will be all over the place as it is without dumping a load of extra fast-acting (and dehydrating) sugar into your system. Drink water, it's the only drink appropriate for replacing lost fluids.

I have the same exact problem everytime my digestive system is upset!
