Hello all! I've just registered and I was just recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Which is a real kick in the teeth as I'm terrified! of needles. Anyways. Hope to chat to some of you soon. E-mail me or IM or post. I don't care.

Hi Moonpaws and welcome. How old are you? I just wonder because you were diagnosed as type 1. The needles are hard at first, not because of pain, but just the thought of it. After awhile, it is just second nature, and just a pain because you have to do it.

Welcome to the forum. I was terrified of needles. It took me at least 30 mins to inject myself the first time, but as Penny stated, it becomes second nature and you don't even think about it.

Hi Moonpaws!

Nice to meet you! :shakehand

Here's the trick with the needle, find a fat spot and inject really fast - it won't hurt that way. I used to inject real slow at first - ouch!
If you still have a hard time, they sell these nifty injection devices online, they've a bit expensive about $50.

Welcome!

Welcome, Moon!

If it makes you feel any better, there was a time where I couldn't even prick my own finger to do my own meter reading, and then one day, I just did it with the encouragment of my father-in-law (a fellow Diabetic). I just stared at my finger for several minutes and then did it. After that, it was smooth sailing.

I know this may not be similiar to injections, but just an example of how time heals.

Just a side not, though... for some reason, I cannot let anybody go ANYWHERE near my fingers with a needle. So, when I go to the doctors, I always have to tell the nurse, "Hey, you can use your own meters, but I have to do the pricking!" ....as I pull out my needle pen. :nurse:

Welcome Moonpaws
I had the same issue with needles. As a child it tooh half of the Dr's staff to hold me down to give me a shot and when I was diagnosed it took a while to get used to the shots but over time you will get used to it and someday think back and laugh at the thought that you once were "terrified of needles"

I find the pricking your finger part is more uncomfotable than the needles. You'll get the hang of it.
