I see quite a few people on here talking about having anaemia and I remembered that my diabetic uncle (also a LADA like me) died from it or complications of it. Is there a link to diabetes? What type of anaemia do people have? Can I prevent it?

I don't know of any direct link with diabetes and anemia. Anemia is very common in people with kidney disease which is also common in people with diabetes.

I know that my doctor has diagnosed me as having "iron deficiency anemia". Don't know if that has anything to do with my diabetes. I believe mine is more of a case of very little iron intake.

I've had diabetes for about 10 years. Never had anemia and frankly, didn't think it would be linked to diabetes. I was anaemic for other reasons... which the hysterectomy and blood transfusions took care of :)
My guess is to eat healthy, take good care of yourself and if you feel unwell and tired all the time have your blood tested for anaemia? Unusual tiredness --and I mean tiiiiired, the house would have been on fire I would have burned along with it -- was what gave it away. I went to see my doc.

Thanks all. I've just found this using Google:

I'm guessing this is what happened to my uncle. Hopefully with modern insulins and glucometers I'll fair better.

I also have iron deficency anemia. Mine did not show up until I had cancer, but I cannot seem to get it fixed.

I've been taking a multivitamin with iron that seems to help. I tried just an iron tablet but they made me sick. I know what's causing mine but at 35, I'm not ready to go down that road yet to stop it.

I take a multi vitimin with iron, I was even put in the hospital to have iron put in with an IV. They keep doing tests to find a reason, but nothing shows. I think I went down that road, if it leads where I think it does, at about 32. Haven't missed it a bit.
Pernicious anemia is an autoimmune condition the same as type 1 diabetes. This runs through my family as does type 1 diabetes. I carry the antibodies for pernicious anemia but have not developed it yet.
