My A1c's are consistently 6.1. Just got a 5.8. My endo asked how I managed, to which I cheerfully replied, "more hypos!!!". As often as I've gotten high after meals, I'm shocked that the A1c could be that decent. I'm still gonna strive to do better, because I hate those destructive highs.

Congrats!! I just had blood drawn this morning and will find out the results when I see my CDE on the 17th. My last one was 4.9 (yes, I was living in Hypoland) and my CDE wants it closer to 6. I was doing good for awhile since a lot of pump changes were made in April but have been slipping back into hypos too often over the last month. Just lowered a couple of basal rates again yesterday. So Im hoping for at least a mid-5 or else I'm gonna get yelled at.

I'd love to get a 5.8 without it being the result of highs getting balanced out by lows.

Thanks, but the crazy thing is I keep getting really high. Right now my bg is 305 on the Accucheck Plus. I'm gonna go check on the Ultra2...254. Like I said the other day, the Plus reads a lot higher than the LifeScan meters. I feel like a failure when I keep underestimating the carbs. We went out for salad, meatball sandwich, and then I gave in to temptation and had dessert--ice cream on a freshly baked chocolate chip cookie. MY BAD!!!

(Someone kick me!!)

I'll never see the 4's. My wife got yelled out for numbers in the 4's too. I couldn't understand why; her hypos weren't that frequent. We both think she's a 1.5, and she's on a pump. Her last was 5.1 and the doc is cool with that.

I hear you too--I hate getting killer lows. i don't mind the usual 55-60, but when I hit less than 45 I'm miserable for a while. The lows intrude on my life when I'm busy. I can't count how many hours I've had to sit at my PC recovering from a low, when I'd rather be working in my shop. I count myself lucky to make it through an entire gardening session without having to run in for tablets or a snack. But having just complained about all this stuff, I must tell everyone I'm so much better off than before I began pumping. I get low because I forget to turn my pump down for prolonged activities, so it's my own fault. I get kinda sloppy with the details... :)

Thanks. I feel like I cheated to have a good number with high bg's so often.

Well, you got to celebrate, right ... That A1c Deserves a cookie sundae.. you should be very proud of that :proud:...

I hope you continue to do so well (but hopefully with less lows) ...

Congratulations! :)

Were they "rebound highs"?

Were they "rebound highs"?

Some were, and some were bad-carb-counting-highs. <g>

it kind of is cheating.

You have to remember, the most damage to your vascular system occures in the first hour after you eat if your blood sugar is spiking up.

Getting a good A1C average does not mean you are not hurting your body, that is, if the good A1C is created by a combitation of frequent highs AND lows to even it out.

I know; that's why I hate getting high at any time.

I hate it, I really do. I can feel my legs get heavy and I dread the damage I am doing to my body, but all I can do is wait for it to come down.

My wife will want to use it when I make a milkshake (they are very small milkshakes) I just bought an Oster powered stirrer thingy, so I had to try it out! :) (See--I told you I was bad!)

I have a hard time with carbs when I'm eating out as well. I forget all of the numbers - 1 cup of cooked pasta = how many carbs? 1/2 cup of ice cream is how many again...? I think I'd do fine if I brought a set of measuring cups & spoons and a scale. I weigh/measure everything at home, and I almost always bring my lunch to work so I've been doing okay with carb counts. But if I eat out, I go back to guessing, which got me in so much trouble when I was on MDI. Seems like I pull a random number out of the air. That's why the Animas pump with the food databse is very appealing. Of course I could buy a PDA and carry a database that way.

When I've had the 4.9 results it was because I was having multiple lows every day. Bad lows. There were days when every single BG test I did was in the 30-50 range. It wears you down and as you know, it takes away time you'd rather be spending doing other things.

I sometimes forget to set a temp basal when I go for my walks. When I do remember it works out well most of the time. Today I knew that I was going to go for a long walk. I set a temp basal of 50% for 2 hours. MY BG was going low (68) before I set out so I ate some trail mix. An hour into my walk I checked my BG and was 100, and I had a small Clif kids energy bar )22g carbs). When I got home, after 2 hours of walking, I was 135. Later I shot up to 185. I usually don't get a rebound high like that after exercise but it does happen sometimes. If I forget to set a temp basal I'll need to eat constantly during my walk to keep my BG up.

On shots, I'd be lucky to walk for 20 minutes without feeling liek I might pass out. It feels great to be able to walk for 2 hours nonstop and not to have to think about my BG constantly.
