Welcom to the forum.

As a pre-diabetic you will benefit a lot by controllind diet and exercise. You don't have to progress to type 2, well, it is not automatic for sure. You have an advance notice that a lot of us did not get, or did not see it coming. Now is the time to really aggressively treat it.....

Consider yourself lucky that you have been given some advance notice of diabetes. I had it for years before it was diagnosed, as was my wife (also a pumper, like myself). 'Tis better to be forewarned, yes? :)

Did you say 8.6? That is not a fasting number pre-diabetics see. You should be <126 fasting. Did you say that?

I did say 8.6 i had fasted through the night and then took the test.I am from a family of diabetics. My father had so as my mother and so has my grandfather and other close family

To convert 8.6 to US Standards you multiple by 18.

That would be 137. That falls well into the type 2 range. The standard seems to be >126 fasting on more than one test on different days.

Pre-diabetic would be <7.

mandy - the difference in pre-diabetic and diabetic surely makes a difference for you. Diabetes indicates that there is some damage to your system. I say damage just because of a lack of better word. Pre-diabetes does not have to be diabetic and you can use diet and exercise to prevent becoming diabetic - well, that ship has sailed.

The good news, sort of, is the treatment is the same. You are the on the low end of the type 2 scale. Aggressive approach now can turn it around. The liver damage or problems with your liver and medications is a problem. Insulin won't change the resistances problem, nor will it make it any better. You will have to look at all the different approaches to insulin resistance there are that don't harm your liver and become aggressive. Diet will do the most for you right away.

I suggest the Richard K Bernstein book as a great education on all the different aspects of diabetes from what the tests are all about to diet. You don't have to follow his approach to the letter to get the great benefits. Learn how to read labels in detail. After a while it becomes second nature and not a problem. You will set standards that will be a simple put back on the shelf or in the cart. It is not as difficult as it first sounds. You don't have to become anal about it, just get in the habit of looking at what is in things and you will make decisions quickly. For example - maltodextrin is another form of sugar. If I see it on the list the object goes back on the shelf. The exception is if it is really low on the list and there is such a small amount that it can be over-looked.

And exercise. Right now that is my downfall. I was doing just fine and got sick for a while and can't get back in the same routine I was maintaining.

Do you agree with what my government is doing trials on marijuana so people with severe pain benifit from it and they have down graded the drug so if the police searches you and you only have a about one or two on you they dont arrest you.

Welcome aboard Mandy, this is a truly great place and I hope you get lots of help and advice formthe great peeps here.

I do agree that they should use Marijuana for medicinal purposes and further to that I believe all drugs should be legalised and if people want to take them then they become registered addicts. The reason being the huge ammount of crime thats caused by drug use, not a view everyone agrees with I know.

Hi there. Thanks for your reply and is very much appreciated what you have to say. This subject is a very hard one because people have so much different attitudes to drug's husband is on pethidine and that is classed as a opium based .He had a a very bad injury many years ago and this drug is very high on the scale as they watch you very closely with this drug just think if they can allow that then they must allow others with such pains be allowed to use it as it helps a great deal for them.
