I was 143 lbs a few months ago and then I have lost 13 pounds and am now at 130! It has really helped my bg's to the point where they are not high at all! This is great! I cut my portions in half and exercised a few times a week and plan on maintaining here at this weight and keeping in shape! I am proud of myself! Anyone else have anyu weight loss success stories?

Please share what you are doing...what do you eat during the day? I am on the pump and have continuously been gaining weight  I exercise everyday for about an hour and nothing is helping. I'd appreciate anything you can share with me,
I need all the advice I can get!
Thanks so much! :) :) :)

Yay Jenny that's great to hear!!! :D :D :D Good for you girl!
 !!
Andrea,
I'm having the same problems as you with the pump and weight gain. Both my CDE and Endo keep telling me my body will adjust and the weight will come right off again, but I'm still waiting for it. Where's my fairy godmother I ask you?!??

Ha Ha, Shy!:D Yeah, I wonder that for myself too! I could sure use a fairy godmother right now. As for the pump issue, it does seem that since I've been on it, I've gained more weight even though I have been exercising like crazy. I know part of the problem is a need to change some of my eating patterns. I think I let the flexibility of the pump go to my head, thinking I could eat whatever I want all the time and I know I need to stop thinking that way. :(
Well, I'm glad that I am not alone with this problem...let me know if you find anything that works for you and I will do the same. Oh and let me know if SHE ever shows up...lol :)
Andrea :)
Anyway,

That's great news on your weight loss, Jenny!
When I was dx'd I knew I had to get my act together too. A rigid diet and walking paid off not only in better bg levels but also with 70lbs of weight loss in about 6 months.
I've been able to maintain that loss (with minor fluctuations) over the past 5 months. Even with some increased eating of late with the holidays etc!
Andrea and Shy ... I hope things even out with the pump and that you are able to make some progress with the weight you want to lose!

Shal (hugs) and Andrea,
I am a borderline diabetic so not on the pump,
I just cut portions down somewhat (hard to do when you are used to eating more) and exercise 3-5 time a week just walking on treadmill. I also cut out hard cheese from my diet and switched to diet soda.......

That is great news!!! Keep up the good work!

I'd like to lose the 10 pounds I gained after taking the radioactive iodine for the Grave's Disease but all I ever do is go into insulin shock. I've tried exercise, not eating, and taking large doses of synthroid but nothing works. I would assume in order to loose weight, one must burn body fat which will cause a rise in the ketones. Is that correct? When I developed diabetes I lost weight so if I allow my blood sugar to run high and force my body to burn fat for fuel, would that work?

LG, I tried the letting the b/s go high for 1-1/2 weeks a few years ago - for my efforts, my vision got blurry, I didn't lose any weight, and stopped when the thirst and constant WC visits started. I remember losing 30lbs seemingly overnite when I first got sick w/ diabetes, but it sure didn't work for me the second time around.
I read in the latest Diabetes Forecast that in order to lose 1 pound, you have to either reduce your diet by 3500 calories or burn that many. (in a one-month period)

where's the smiley face after such a comment?

I think that only happens when you're BG is out of whack.
To lose weight you have to burn calories and exercising burns calories. So, if you exercise and keep watch over your BG and make sure it's in the acceptable range you would be OK;)

I DO want to lose weight, but I am not willing to risk my health in order to do so. I think staying in control is more important. I wouldn't jeopardize my future health to drop a few pounds. I guess i'll just have to watch what I eat a little closer. I wish there was an easier way ;)

Me too, Andrea - but you're right. Sometimes I forget that in addition to carbs, I have to watch calories as well. Excercise and eating less calories is the way to go - not letting your b/s go through the roof.

Hello!
I've lost 1 1/2 stone since last July. That's 21 lbs or, if you prefer 9.5 kg. Have gone down 2 dress sizes. I'm still losing, slowly, as I have been told losing yet another stone (14 lbs) should be my final target.
I had to lose weight to keep diabetes in control but feared dieting would make BG go through the roof. Last year, my diabetes was rather out of control... and dieting proved to be merely impossible. So what did I do?
You will perhaps think I'm nuts but... I got the idea from a Visa statement ;)
I just put little things on my Visa... and gas for my car. I don't spend lots of money. Nonetheless, each month, my Visa bill is quite big. Looking at it closely, I found out £7 here... £15 there... all added up to a huge amount at the end of the month. Then I saw the light!!!
It's the same with what we eat. If you are careful about this, and about that... a little less fat here, and a little less fat there... you don't starve yourself to death, you don't think about 'cheating' all the time, BG is kept under control... and slowly, and gently well it makes enough a difference to lose weight. I like cooking too so I try lots of recipes. I only teach French part time so I have lots of spare time on my hands to do so.
Of course, I must outline the importance of exercice too. Vital! My main problem is... I'm so busy sometimes and tired that I tell myself Oh! Tomorrow. And tomorrow comes and... I don't do it. The less I do, the less I want to do! But I've found something that is working ---well so far!
I do what I like best; brisk walks, usually in the morning. Ride my bike now and then. Don't use my car or park it far far away in the parking lot. My daughter has this dance mat and we have little competitions. It's fun! I go for a walk with hubby after dinner. I got this book 'Ten minute work out' but I must admit... alone, and at home... ack!!! Hard to keep at it. You lose interest. In other words, I've set myself this daily goal : to do 20 minutes minimum. No matter how high the ironing pile gets... or how badly I need to vacuum... or how tired I am... well I just do it. And oddly enough, I don't feel as tired when I exercice on a regular basis.
Well this is what I do. It works for me. Most of the time anyway! I don't over stress with it and I don't weigh myself more than twice a month. It's better to notice the difference in your clothes! Is a better guide. And you always feel a bit better too...
And by the way... have tried to put my Visa on a 'diet' but doesn't work ;)

I had the worst time when I was first diagnosed ... because I was thinking ... "Gee, no more sweets" ... and "Gee, that's a lot of weight to lose" ... and I knew how hard dieting and exercise had been in the past.
After I had lost first noticeable weight, a friend asked how I did it ... because he had problems trying to lose weight.
I told him fear is a strong motivator! ... and filled him in on the diagnosis.
I've never considered it optional to get my bg under control or to lose weight. I knew that a better diet would help me control the bg and would lead to weight loss ... I also knew that exercise of some sort would help with both goals too.
It took me a while to get the exercise part going, because I was just not inclined in that direction. Fortunately, probably because of the fear factor, I had much better luck with the diet aspect.
But ... once I did start walking (I walked with friends at work), I found it easier to get myself going with the physical activity each day.
Now I'm walking 4 times a day (30 minutes in the morning and at night; 15 minutes on each of my two breaks at work) ... and I've done well at maintaining a healthier diet too.
If you are interested, the weight-loss diet was the standard 2000 calorie one from the doc, limited to no more than 60g of carbs per meal. Now, in the maintenance phase, I eat about the same amount of carbs but let myself have more meat (protein) and, on occasion, more fat.
Good luck to all with finding a strategy that works for you!

I seem to have lost my way a little with my weight loss. I have lost 22lbs, but that was before Christmas, I have put on 3 1/2 lbs since then. I went back to Weight Watchers yesterday, and I went to a different meeting with a new leader, and she is VERY motivational. So I have high hopes of losing the rest of the excess weight.
I also walk my dogs for excercise, but I'm afraid not on a regular enough basis.
All my family are eager to excercise with me, but their promises never come to anything. So I have to devise something on my own. I think I will go swimming, but I'm not sure yet.

... less of me to love. Down 2 jeans size! Can almost fit in a 12 but is ridiculously too tight. I'd have to give up sitting down ;)
I'm wondering if cholesterol wise I'm doing as well. Too bad; no way of knowing until the big test which is in March.

Focus on what you've lost, be proud! And as for the rest, just one day at a time. It's one thing to slim down but another to slim down with a smile! :)

Of course, everyone should also be aware that a 12 in the UK is the same as a size 8 in north america!!

... Andrea, a size 12 in UK is a 10 in North America. Last time I could easily fit in a size 8 in Canada I was about 12 y/o I think... ;)
Don't know if it's the same on the other side of the puddle but over here clothes are soooo small and narrow. I'd have to cut myself in two to actually fit in most of them! I mostly get my clothes from 'Principles' and 'Dorothy Perkins' shops because they seem to make clothes a bit wider.
I don't think I'll ever make it to a size 12 in UK. But that is not my aim. I use the BMI thingy instead to judge if my weight is healty... Here is a link to a BMI calculator. My doc always look at my BMI, not my actual weight. Here is the link:
http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpa/bmi/calc-bmi.htm
At the moment, my BMI is 26,3... and 24,9 would be normal for my height. So still have work to do... :) :) :)

Jenny, Marie, Ed, and Linda, Congratulations on your weight loss! Keep up the good work!
Since I was diagnosed with T2 a I've been on a 2700 calorie diet my dietician has prescribed for me. Lost 65 pounds since then. Also, I walk my dog at least twice a day at 20 minute intervals, sometimes more if the weather's nice.

Ed,
Just registered on the forum. Your losing 70lbs. is very engouraging to me. However, I have lost 10 in the last 6 weeks and cannot seem to lose any more. Walk 30 minutes a day, 4-5 times a week, and watch what I eat. I know my diet is not real strict, but a pound every month or so would be great.
Any suggestions?????????

When I was dxd in Nov of 98 I weighed 188 and by Feb of 99 I was 148. I had lost 40 lbs, but then I got on the pump in 00, I was 160 (my ideal weight) and since I have had the pump I am up to 200 lbs. Fortunately I don't look like I weigh 200, most people say, man I can't believe that, I would have thought 180. Actually, one time at my doctor, the nurse put me on the scale and put it at 180, then 185, then 190...when she got to 200, she said, WOW. I would never of thought it. Which of course was a downer...but oh well. Hopefully one day I will lower weight.

I'd like to loose 10 pounds but nothing I've tried works. All I do is go into insulin shock. I've been thinking of having my brain removed since I don't use it but I'd probably only loose 1/1,000 of an ounce or so. In fact, I'd probably gain weight once the stitches are used to close the incision.

Weight loss comes from a multitude of things but the basics are DIET and EXERCISE. With those two we also need to watch how much insulin we take in. I don't mean to run high blood sugars but insulin causes weight gain. We are already on a DIET so what we need to do is adjust our insulin intake and our exercise.

I am off the pump now and have been losing....when i was on the pump i was gaining so much weight not like a huge amount but enough where i had to go up pants sizes it was getting on my nerves....the pump is a great device but for me it just made me lazy...you have to get your basal down because insulin stores fat...and the more your on the worse it gets...just keep exercising and watch what you eat....its all about control when your on the pump....

Thanks, Gina. It is frustrating to see my weight rising each time they check it at the Dr.'s. At times, I wonder if I should get off the pump as well. I must take some responsibility for the gain, I have been eating more than I should be and more frequently. I guess I let the freedom of the pump go to my head. I wasn't expecting such a gain. I am working on getting my insulin dose down. Last visit with my CDE/dietician, she gave me a meal plans, so I am trying to follow it and hopefully I'll see some good results.
How are things now that you are back on injections? I hope that things are going well.
Andrea
Its going much better, but that is because I dont wanna take a million shots during the day to cover what i eat...so im not snacking as much as used to...the pump gave me alot of freedom TOO MUCH HAHAH

I'd actually been slowly losing for a long period of time before I was diagnosed. About 3 years ago I was 305, and at diagnosis last month was around 245. I don't think it was undetected diabetes that caused it, as I was noticably eating less, and had changed other meds at the same time frame that I started losing.
Anyway, I've dropped about another 15 pounds to 231 since the diagnosis, and have the hope of getting down to 205. Oddly, since I started the diet/walk thing, my concern has been losing weight too fast.
