View Full Version : Off the wall question

but I've been wondering.
I'm taking Lantus and Novolog.....MDI...and there's usually a little bubble of insulin left on the needle when I pull out. Sometimes it drips...sometimes not. A couple of times it's dripped. It's made me wonder what would happen to my cat if she managed to ingest it somehow (I know....highly unlikely, but I started thinking about throwing away pens after they're done and all sorts of things...).
So, does anyone know if human analog insulin would impact either cats or dogs in an adverse way?
off the wall, I know.
It's a protein, it will get digested at best, cause a stomach ache at worst or a "sour face" reaction. It won't lower blood sugars.

If you could lower bg by injesting insulin, they'd have insulin pills rather than injections. ;)
I think it smells like bandaids :- and I guess my cats don't like that smell so they make ugly faces at drips of insulin. Now if they see an old infusion set lying about.........:ridinghor

Ya, the cat now snuggles in bed just so he can play with it. Wish the wife had the same attitude :- Maybe I could wash the kitchen table with insulin to keep the cat off at night, hmmm.

I was under the impression that stomach acids destroy insulin and that's why we have to inject it rather than taking it by mouth. With that being the case, I doubt if anything would happen to your friend.

If it hurt them, my puppy would be dead!!! When he was little he chewed through more than one of my pump sets while I was not paying attention. I thought he was snuggling!!!! Yeh right. Mom carries fun toys with her.

nope..., you can eat all the insulin u want and feel ok i think. just like eating a rabbit. (100% protein)
although u couldnt pay me to do it because of the smell
Whe had to inject humulin U in our diabetic car. For whatever that's worth. Didn't make the cat all that happy.

Trust me, insulin doesn't taste nice either. It tastes exactly like it smells - just like Germoline.

Hmm has me wondering would drinking it have the same effect as drinking lots of grapefruit juice (an earlier post by Deus) I dont mean add sweetness I mean add the taste of germoline?

Too funny!
Thanks everyone. The smell is actually what made me wonder...some animals are attracted to things with funky smells....and my cats are freaks anyway. I'll stop worrying that they'll have a reaction if they ever get into a discarded pen that still has a unit or two!

Not only have both my dogs chewed my insfusion sets on more than 3 occations becuase of the smell, but i lost 2 meters and like 4 meter pouces to my dogs. Im guessing its the smell of the blood of my used strips.
they now realize what happens if they do that again...
probally will anyways...
