So after spending the weekend training my 7 year-old on what to do when I get hypo...she had to use that training about 30 minutes ago. I was doing fine all day, sugars in a great range, etc. I went outside for a few minutes, sitting on the porch swing and started sweating. I thought it was because all of a sudden it got really hot outside (it's been overcast most of the day, and cool). I got up to come inside and I started shaking and getting really tired. The sweating was really happening fast too...

Pulled out my meter and with shaky fingers/hands got it going. My daughter ran up to me and asked what was the matter and I told her I felt like I was low. She helped me stab myself and did the meter on her own. :) She saw the number (51) and immediately pulled out 4 glucose tabs for me... Then made me a peanut butter sandwich! What a good girl. :) She didn't panic, asked me if I thought I needed daddy (he works from home, so was just upstairs), and did I need her to call anyone else. I'm *so* proud of her!!! :D :D

I'm wondering what in the heck triggered this one. Normally this happens if I overestimate how many carbs I'm going to eat and give myself too much humalog... I didn't overestimate at all today (since everything I ate was the same as I almost always eat, so they're *known* carbs) and I finished everything that I ate.

I'm feeling much better now, but knowing what I know about myself this means I'm probably going to have another couple of hypos today. Ugh!

So, could it have been the sudden heat? I tend to doubt that, but who knows?

I've had similar reactions from heat induced sweat...I will go low faster sitting outside sweating than if I'm actually doing something physical that causes me to sweat. Especially if the humidity is high...which is usually is down south where I live. I don't know if you experience that where you are....my sister lives in Orting and she can't deal with the humidity here at ALL!

Very good job on your daughter's part. Kids are the best things sometimes, the rest of the time you just want to shut them in the closet. Good job on teaching her what to do and glad to hear you're ok.

Your daughter did great....good for you for training her so well.

As for the hypo, it is sad, but just as soon as we think we have it all down and figured out....."D" changes the rules. Hormones, extra activity, hormones, humidity, hormones oh and did I say hormones? :vollkomme All effect your blood sugar.

Hope you feel better soon.

Your daughter sounds like a great kid who can think quickly and not panic. I think it's fantastic that she can help you with the meter and understands that 51 = low. Plus she got the treatment right - quick carbs followed by something that will last longer!

Once they're old enough to understand what's going on, kids are wonderful in this respect. I can't tell you how many times my 8 year old daughter has helped me out with my lows. I'm glad you're teaching her what to do and helping her understand your diabetes. There was an instance at one office that I worked at where my sugar just dove; it was right after starting the pump and very unexpected. One of the guys in the office was the brother of a diabetic and had no earthly idea of what to do to help me. Luckily another was married to a diabetic and he took over until the EMTs arrived. I woke up to an IV in my arm and a blood soaked shirt with people standing all around me. Seems I got a little beligerant before they got me into a chair and treated.

good for you and the daughter, Rikki!

What a lucky Mom you are to have a prepared daughter. In fact, how smart of you to train her. Glad you are doing okay now. Keep up the good parenting.
